Thanks for posting that Telly, it's not often I have cause to feel sympathy for a kazoo.

Thanks for posting that Telly, it's not often I have cause to feel sympathy for a kazoo. It's getting blown by a not-unattractive guy. I don't know if it deserves sympathy or envy.

Roy Batty's Pet Dove - Oh ok fffiiiiyyyuuunnnneee, I listened to it. It's not terribly good, but what it is is an actual parody. Take note, Minecraft fuckwits!

You guys know I never actually want to hear this song again, right? I figured it would take a lot to drag you away from it. A hundred men or more, even.

(It wasn't until after I posted this that I realized the article is over one year old, and that my link is to the GetPocket site, where I found it, instead of to the Rolling Stone site, where it was written. All this second-hand reference is entirely appropriate.)

Well this is just the flip side of the "I Want It That Way" discussion, isn't it? "Don't Stop Believing" is also a garbage song, if not quite as bad as "Africa" so it's entirely logical that one is the new version of the other, one awful song replaced by another. "Don't Stop Believing" doesn't have the uncomfortable imperialist elements I guess, so that's something maybe? From the article: Yes. Yes there is.

I stopped collecting Rolling Stone magazines around 1984.

Dude - the way this riff builds on the left and then tears across the middle of your brain to a short fade on the right, like a train coming up and past you, right after the 'midnight train' lyrics in the open, is terrific. The song is stupid, but the music is so well put together that it doesn't matter.

Prole Hole, I figured you'd appreciate learning that this version of the song "Africa" is a thing which exists.

Haven't checked in here in a while. Just read this article. This is by far my favorite part:
CBS chose to play it in their coverage of Nelson Mandela’s funeral, which even the Toto guys thought was a bit insane. (Singer and co-writer David Paich released a statement saying CBS should have used actual South African music instead, adding “We honor Nelson Mandela.”)

Look, I'm going to upvote this because I appreciate the effort you went to just to read an article about this stupid song. But I am concerned about the long-term mental wellbeing of the TIF that this thread has now been running for almost four and a half years...

It took some time to do these things we think are bad.

Stereogum's Tom Breihan is covering every Number One song on Billboard's Hot 100 in order, one hit per column. Today's column covers the song which was Number One on February 5, 1983. Guess what?
Tom's a worthwhile writer who does his homework thoroughly, and his series has stolen much of my web time over the past year or so. Everybody keeps reminding each other that it's not about the number - yes, it bugs me he gives this a higher score than "Penny Lane."

Numbers are definitely irrelevant if Breihan rates Weezer's "Beverly Hills" a 7 out of 10.
