It’s Thanksgiving with the Belchers here in episode four of season six, “Gayle Makin’ Bob Sled”, where Bob is once again pulled away from his yearly turkey duties this time to help generally human shaped carbuncle Gayle after she gets injured. It’s upto Linda to pull the dinner together and for Bob to get some bonding time with Gayle in this episode which promises to be graded no higher than B-!
The only thing I’ve learned across the series is that Linda’s sister is horrible, this episode does nothing to allay that but I don’t think it ever really tried, Gayle is supposed to be an awful, self-interested kook and this is her at her most aggravating. The episode does move at decent pace with the blizzard (which looks wonderful by the way) but it’s standard for Thanksgiving to be a complete disaster by now and this episode does rely heavily on the cringe comedy, not something I’m fond of. It's a typical Thanksgiving episode, Bob is put upon and endures everything getting between him and his turkey, the man even got split from his turkey baster! Gayle though is a hot mess, most everything she touches turns into a wet recently coughed up hairball and in this it's difficult not to hold the same level of contempt for her as Bob does throughout doing all of the silly errands she requests. I used to think she'll be what Tina will become, now I fear for her becoming like that.
The stuff with Linda and the kids doing the Thanksgiving dinner seemed okay, they once again proved that the Belchers don’t really know what it means to do research on the internet but I guess it went down an average road of inedible food from the kids which I’ve seen elsewhere done better though trying to move a turkey by grabbing its legs is probably the most stupid yet quintessentially Linda thing to have happen. Even the little things like Bob’s scatting and Teddy’s singles cruise trip with his mom help to inject a little fun inbetween the horrible candied potatoes and greenbean jellybean medleys of the rest of the episode. At least it didn't end with an overt "family is good" message, instead a slightly odd "families annoy you but that's good because that means you have one" which is about right as our capper to a fairly uninspiring episode.
Episode 4: Gayle Makin’ Bob Sled
Store of the week: Maxi Pads Large Apartment Rentals
Exterminator of the week: The Good, The Bad and the Bugly Pest Control
Burger of the day: None but we did get “Big Girls Don’t Dry Cleaners” and “Some Strings Attached Guitar Tuners”

“I’m having a terrible time, Bob. I don’t think my mom respects herself.”

C- | While it's not a true failure of an episode like The Equestranauts was it comes very close by, true that it’s tradition to have a near complete failure of a Thanksgiving for the Belchers but this one was dragged all the way down by Gayle just being Gayle (she is the reason you’ll never get me to like “Electric Love”) but saved from a D+ just from Teddy’s scene alone. |
