Thoughts on the New Year Special... Had pretty much everything I enjoy about the show, plus everything I hate - by which I mean ADHD Leprechaun Moriarty. Also ripped off every world-within-a-world, is-it-a-dream metanarrative plot ever, and cheekily used the Leverage Ninja Zoom technique, twice. Other than that... it was entertaining enough, but I fear me that the new season will crawl comfortably back up its own arse in short order.

I liked it, I guess, despite some of it. I would have preferred a true stand-alone, as opposed to what we got. But most of the Victorian stuff was a lot of fun, and there were a few big laughs in it.

I'm pretty mixed in my reaction, but it at least seems like the showrunners are a little aware they fucked up.
Also, did I just watch two hours of a guy coming to the conclusion that someone who shot themself in the head is still dead?

Enjoyed it. I think Lupin pretty much nailed it: it was great for all the same reasons it's always great - namely the chemistry between the two leads and the fleet dialogue - and bad for all the same reasons it's always bad. I'm actually glad they tied it back into the modern day story, as I had thought it would be a full standalone piece of frippery. It's no good for a mystery show to excuse holes or conveniences on dream-logic though. That's no fun. Oh, Mary found them, did she? Well that's convenient.
Not that I needed a nudge, but this has me more excited for Season 4. Also I've been rewatching the series the past couple months, so timing was good.

Guy on the Old Country review comments bitching extensively about the term 'mansplaining' while very loudly insisting he's NOT a MRA, honest.

I bailed on it after about 10 minutes. I think I'm sick of TV.

Guy on the Old Country review comments bitching extensively about the term 'mansplaining' while very loudly insisting he's NOT a MRA, honest. *gets popcorn* There was a girl I briefly went out with in film school who claimed that anytime a man explains something to a woman, it's mansplaining. She turned out to be a crazy person (She once went on a rant that anyone who didn't agree with her that women were inherently more attractive then men was a misogynist and called Lindsay Ellis a "false feminist." I read her Tumblr and discovered she was obsessed with Jews, so I got the hell out of there.) but for about a year afterward, I was afraid to ever explain anything to a woman. Changing the subject, Is anyone else put off by the generally dour, grey look and tone of British television the last few years? I know a lot of people in Britain, particularly in the entertainment industry, have a ridiculously low opinion of their own country, but it's like they saw Wallander or something and said "yeah, let's all be like that, all the time." And since then, it always appears to be January on British shows. And Sherlock is one of the worst offenders. I'm said to say this, but it feels like this show exists to be kind of unpleasant. And yes, I'll say it, Benedict Cumberbatch's interpretation of Sherlock Holmes is deliberately unpleasant.

Return of the Thin Olive Duke And the BBC Wallander, at least, (accurately) depicts Sweden as an absolutely gorgeous country—I actually remember being there being a lot of stunning, bright color in a number of episodes, in contrast to the tone of the show and Scandinavian stereotypes.

So is Britain! I was there this summer, and the whole country's like a garden!

After last season I said I was done with Sherlock. Still, I watched this, and it felt like an old dog barking at the moon. A lot of empty, showy howling.
