OK. I know what you're thinking. The Beastie Boys version is unimpeachable. Sure. I get it. On the other hand, this Cancer Bats version has some amazing pinch harmonics and pick scrapes and, well, that's all I'm looking for in a song so y'all can suck it.

Another Lucinda cover in her fine Louisiana drawl; here of a great favourite of mine by Dylan, "Tryin' to Get to Heaven". And the same by Bowie.
(Look for the original on a streaming service).

So this isn't really a cover in the spirit of this thread, because it's not an official recording or anything, but last night on America's Got Talent this guy fucking CRUSHED Radiohead's "Creep." Chills, man.

"Hey Jude", or at least everything after the two minute mark, is possibly my least favorite Beatles song. Wilson Pickett and Duane Allman improve all of it:

I just heard the Devo cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" for the first time, and I'm convinced it's better than the original.

It's faster than the original. Faster is always better in punk rock, everyone knows that.

I'd have put it in this thread much sooner otherwise.

I'd have put it in this thread much sooner otherwise. In retrospect, it seems pretty obvious that it wasn't an original song but it never crossed my mind to look it up (and to be honest it's not one of the GB songs I've ever bothered to listen to since ripping my Start Today CD years ago). This is kinda like the first time I listened to Wire's Pink Flag and realized that the New Bomb Turks' "Mr. Suit" and Minor Threat's "12xU" were covers

I was always weirded out by Three Dog Night's "One is the Loneliest Number". The Harry Nilsson cover is pretty great. I wish he had won the record club.
Yes, now that I look up the video I realize his was the original. Learning!

The version that's so much an improvement that apparently now when one of the Gallaghers does this song, this is the version they do.

These guys are kind of gimmicky – Swedish pop band who specializes in twee covers of classic heavy metal songs – but I somehow like Hellsongs’ version of “Blackened” more than Metallica’s:

Y'all I got nothing against the Rolling Stones, but I love this version.
And speaking of Ben Folds covering things...

I was never a huge fan of the R.E.M. original, or at least the live version I had on a compilation of radio station live appearances.

From an okay Roberta Flack / George Benson tune to a sinewy, sexy jam. I love the way the song drifts and coasts for the last 2 minutes.

It seems too obvious to point out that Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" is superior to Dylan's in every single way, so I won't bother. But still, it is.
Of relevance, at least to me, we have Pet Shop Boys, "Always On My Mind":
Taking a cheesy, over-sincere, rather saccharine original, turning it around into a propulsive electronic work, bringing real sincerity to it, and still retaining the essence of the original song and what was so great about it? That's, to me, what a really great cover version should do, and I find this so superior to the Elvis version I sometimes have difficulty remembering its not their song (admittedly not their greatest video, though).
And I'm including this, on a similar vein, just because I find it very funny. Pet Shop Boys, "Where The Streets Have No Name (Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You)":
I do genuinely prefer this to the U2 version, simply on the grounds that it takes yet another ponderous, self-serious Bono drag and just relentlessly takes the piss out of it. Blending it with "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" is a stroke of genius, very funny, and just exactly the right way to puncture Bono's pomposity. Though, to give Bono his due, in a rare flash of actually-being-funny, his apparent response to hearing this version was "What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?"

I've kind of given up attempting to embed videos, so sorry about that. But some choices: The Cramps, Domino - Orbison's original is great, but this has style and menace to spare The Clash, I Fought The Law - no contest My 8 year old plays that Clash cover ALL THE TIME. He loves it so much. It's a great song, but loses its luster a bit after the 97th play.

If you never thought the Bee Gees could tear your heart out, you've never heard them in the hands of Al Green:

Gaslight Anthem is usually pretty uptempo, and Teenage Dream is totally anthemic, so I was surprised at how touching Horrible Crowes' (Fallon's non-Gaslight side project) cover is. Perry's version is all adolescent energy, but Fallon is an old man grateful for renewal.

I don't think that improves on the original, this being largely straight forward if less funky because of the lack of fuzz bass, but I will say the video is a lot of fun. The dummy being thrown out of the car is perhaps the most clever reference to other Beastie Boys videos that they make here.

Television's version of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" removes the mawkish sentimentality of the original and turns it more into a kind of artsy blues -- in has something that makes me think it's closer in spirit to the Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers," where despite the sadness of the lyrics, the music is more fun and engaging than it lets on.
