Here is Bryan Fuller in 2013 talking about a hypothetical Star Trek series he'd like to do. He wanted Angela Bassett to be Captain and Rosario Dawson to be first officer. Before he was the guy who did all these beloved cult shows like Pushing Daises and Hannibal, Bryan Fuller got his start in Hollywood writing for Star Trek: Voyager and successfully pitched two stories to Deep Space Nine. Here is a trailer for the first episode with a Fuller credit: Incidentally Bryan Fuller is the showrunner for CBS All Access's 2017 Star Trek series.

I'll be able to rationally respond to this news in like, maybe two weeks. Right now it's just a neon flashing sign that reads "DREAMS DO COME TRUE."

rimjobflashmob This video captures my arc of feelings perfectly. First, just the knowledge Star Trek would be back on TV, then the reveal Bryan Fuller will showrun it (and the hope for what comes next:)

I have high hopes for this; certainly it's the most exciting news in Star Trek since they fucked the franchise with Into Darkness. And we know a heavily integrated crew won't be a problem on his watch.
But I am a little cautious about giving a guy who just turned his favourite 'ship into an entire series being given the keys to the show that caused slashfic in the first place. I kid, slightly...
Main feeling: as long as he's smart enough to do what Roddenberry did and hire the cream of modern SF to pitch for the show, I think it could be amazing.

This is pretty much the best possible news for this show. I do hope he stays out of nu-Trek continuity, but I guess I can live with it if he's stuck there.

This is pretty much the best possible news for this show. I do hope he stays out of nu-Trek continuity, but I guess I can live with it if he's stuck there. He's said before he likes that continuity and wanted his Star Trek: Reliant pitch to be set in it - and frankly, what continuity the series is in is irrelevant provided it's any good, which with Fuller at the helm it has a good shot at being. A related problem is whether or not CBS could connect to the Paramount movies. Much hay has been made of Alex Kurtzmann's involvement in the series as he was involved in the first two reboot films, but he was never involved in the current, third film (unlike his ex-partner Orci's doomed flirtation with directing it) so it doesn't actually suggest a connection between the two franchises and more that CBS wanted someone from that talent pool to get things going. But I am a little cautious about giving a guy who just turned his favourite 'ship into an entire series being given the keys to the show that caused slashfic in the first place. I kid, slightly... After generations of Star Trek being associated in its fandom with homosexual relationships; it might as well go ahead and actually have one, though.

It's less because of this show and more for the future of the franchise in general. I'd prefer for nu-Trek to stay confined to the current movie series, with the regular continuity continuing elsewhere. There were 40+ years of stories in the old continuity, and I don't want that to be over for good.

I'm thrilled either way but I would much prefer a return to the old Trek continuity. I know it's probably too much to ask, though.

Wooo! Excellent news!! Hiring someone who loves Star Trek to be in charge of Star Trek? What a crazy idea! It just might work!
Edited to add: I also just had a mini freak out in my kitchen over how exciting this is. I think I scared the dogs.

I think I made the right choice to watch the Star Trek shows this year. I have this giant grin on my face I can't get rid of apparently. This is exciting beyond belief!

I am really, really excited by this news. As a complete Trek dork who has increasingly become really down about the reboot films, this is the best news I've heard in a long, long time.
Really looking forward to seeing what Fuller does with the show. It gives me hope that I'll have a new Star Trek thing that actually feels like Star Trek again.

Wait, for the first time, or a rewatch? If for a first time, how far did you get in watching them? Wow, did you get through all of Star Trek? Original Trek? Can't imagine watching TNG and DS9 all in one year. That would be pretty amazing. Except then you'd experience the long, slow decline, ending with this last reboot movie, except on Fast Forward. While I had to experience it in painfully drawn out real time. Wonder which is worse? Fast or slow? I cannot express how happy I am about Bryan Fuller! Damn, CBS is actually serious about making a quality Star Trek show? And they're still going to air it exclusively on streaming??

I do not watch enough TV nor know enough about Fuller to be excited, which puts me weirdly out-of-step with everyone else.
Still, based on what I’ve read this guarantees the series will have character, which means my big fear of generic Trek won’t come true.

I hope I'll watch DS9 in the next few months, but I'm not sure if I should bother with Enterprise and Voyager (I really like Kate Mulgrew). I'm pretty fond of binge-watching and it is pretty amazing so far.

If memory serves, Jean-Luc Lemur had a very well curated list of recommend-worthy Voyager episodes.

Can we set the show in the late Captain Sulu era, have him getting ready for retirement with his hubby and training his replacement? I'd actually really just love the show to be set in that era as there's some fun stuff to explore over a big time period and the ship nerd in me loves that tubby Excelsior class so much. While I absolutely would prefer they go back to the original timeline (though I'm not holding my breath) I'm not super gungho on a post-nemesis/voyager setting.

Baron von Costume Well according to the Variety announcement, This could mean that the series is in its own timeline (like Ron D. Moore's Battlestar Galactica), or it if does tie into an existing timeline, likely not in a way that calls attention to itself (like Russell T. Davies' Doctor Who.)

Found the list Douay-Rheims-Challoner referred to, copied it into a text document (so I no longer have to brave disqus to find it). These are episodes I’d consider B- or above—A or A- is in bold, italics represents ones I’ve added since revisiting via Prole Hole ’s reviews: Season One:
“Caretaker”
“Prime Factors”
“Faces”
Season Two:
“Projections”
“Prototype”
“Meld”
“Dreadnought” (Roxanne Biggs powerhouse—seriously, for most of the episode she’s essentially acting against herself and does a great job of it)
“Death Wish”
“Lifesigns”
“The Thaw” (series best, Trek at its most Prisoner-esque) Season Three:
“The Swarm”
“Futures End” (two-parter) (for fun, especially the now-dated 90s trappings)
“Fair Trade”
“Distant Origin”
“Worst Case Scenario”
“Scorpion” (just don’t go in thinking it’s Voyager’s “Best of both Worlds”) Season Four:
“Scorpion, Part Two”
“The Raven”
“Year of Hell” (two-parter)
“Concerning Flight”“Waking Moments”
“Message in a Bottle”
“Hunters”
“Prey”
“Living Witness”
“One”
“Hope and Fear”
Season Five:
“Night”
“Drone”
“Timeless”
“30 Days”
“Counterpoint”
“Bride of Chaotica”
“Gravity”
“Dark Frontier” (hated in fandom for being part of the de-fanging of the Borg, but decent enough on its own) “The Fight”“Relativity” Season Six:
“Survival Instinct” (Ron Moore’s only VOY episode, really more a B+ but elevated by a lot of nice little touches)
“Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy”
“Dragon’s Teeth”
“One Small Step”
“The Voyager Conspiracy”
“Pathfinder”
“Virtuoso”
“Life Line”
Season Seven:
“Body and Soul”
“Shattered”
“The Void”
“Workforce” (two-parter)

Yeah, I mostly see that as code for "we're doing whatever we want so don't yell at us when we don't use the klingons or the borg right away." I can't wait to see what comes out of it though, if nothing else it should be interesting.

As someone who has never seen an episode of Star Trek, nor any of the movies, I'd be more excited for this if it had the exact same cast as Hannibal, give or take Lee Pace.

That list does have the advantage of having a decent number of Bryan Fuller's Voyager episodes. Though, I agree, you cannot call yourself a real Star Trek fan if you've never seen Threshold. If you can still call yourself a fan after seeing that, then you are a TRUE Trekkie. Sanziana Ooh, you're on TNG season 3! That's my favorite TNG season. Hope you are loving it!

If you can still call yourself a fan after seeing that, then you are a TRUE Trekkie. I was an undergrad when Voyager started. We didn't have a local UPN station, so we basically started a club to watch it - someone would have their parents, who lived about an hour away, record it, and then they'd run it up to the school and we'd watch it in the library. Despite all this trouble we were going to to watch Voyager, Threshold just broke me. I just couldn't watch the show after that. It wasn't just that it was bad, it was that it made me so angry at how bad it was that I decided, for my own mental health, that I needed to stop watching the show.

Desert Dweller Huh, I so I guess I do have an opinion of Fuller after all, and it’s a favorable one! “Threshold” is weird and bad, but it’s so weird that it’s—not quite compelling, but not impossible to watch either. The real Voyager feat of strength is “Parturition.”
