Only three weeks this time, getting better. Hey all you kids out there, this weeks episode is entitled “The Gene and Courtney Show” where it’s Valentine’s Day (oddly timely for Bob’s Burgers) where Gene and Courtney’s past catches up to them and Tina is doing some romantic thing, maybe involving butts or Jimmy Jr..
This one seems to fall into an odd place, it is Bob’s Burgers and our fourth seasonal episode in the past five so maybe it’s all the schmaltzy-for-Bob’s-Burgers storylines coming at once and fatiguing me because I'm not the best with love. Or feelings. Or compassion. Anwyay, we get an A-plot with Courtney and Gene’s actual like-like blossoming for Courtney into existence, at least for Gene who takes a fairly and unexpectedly (for Gene) adult take on that near the end.
Gene is a character who doesn’t really shoulder much, pure id all the way and that’s cool but up until now the deepest connection he’s had outside his family has been with an intelligent toilet. This episode at least shows there could be good growth within Gene, just need to work on it and it need not be just in pursuit of love but that might come at the cost of that unbridled sense of fun he has, such is giving a character layers. Tina’s is pretty much about as much a Tina based storyline as you could expect. For her, whole swathes of character development have developed out of her desire for love and to be loved so to find her lovelorn and without a carnation on V-Day seems right for her. It all works out pretty cutely though and she even kisses Jimmy Jr. at the end, pretty impressive for our awkward sausage. Still, it’s a good episode even if Courtney’s oral fixation continues to make me gag a bit.

B+ | Not bad, could be better but a well-rounded episode as Bob’s Burgers tends to be with aspects of love, some great lines and though I didn’t mention it in the main short-ass review, I loved the late night Flower Market and the concept of a Florist’s Permit. |
