The MLS season is about to start and I've decided to fill the void of football by getting really into the Chicago Fire, as Wisconsin does not have a team.
Go Fire! Burn the other team! All I know about the Fire is they're Bad!

Atlanta's team doesn't start up till next season so I've just been picking teams till then. Last year I was split between the Timbers and Sporting KC (KC being the closest to a southern team) but myr brother gave me a Toronto jersey for christmas sign by one of their players (who was the brother in law of a girl he was dating at the time) so I'm pulling for them this year. Plus they have several USMNT players! Speaking of the USMNT what do we think of the new Shield and the leaked Away kits? Personally I like the shield a lot but dear god those kits...

Yeah I love the new shield but that kit looks like maaaaaaaybe a practice kit. It's super lazy.

Do the New York Red Bulls still exist? Indeed. In fact they're pretty good, went to their conference championship last year

In the SPL, Aberdeen are only 4 points behind Celtic with 10 games to go. This is a miracle in itself but there's still a chance that Aberdeen will win the league. If that happens it'll be the first time a team other than Rangers or Celtic have won the league since 1985. COME ON, ABERDEEN. FUCK OFF, CELTIC.

Yeah I'm the same, most of them are either just plain terrible, or terrible because they're trying way too hard to be euro-style. The number of FCs in the names in particular annoys me when the league itself calls the sport soccer, most of the fans call it soccer and if you ever actually started saying football club people would think you were a straight up moron.

As expected the Fire did lose.
One player also kicked a teammate in the head.
Good start to the year, in my opinion.

I'm torn when it comes to mls names. the american names are pretty much all goofy as heck but the European names are mostly boring... I generally agree, but I'll definitely make a case for the Fire (which is my default MLS team). It's historically and thematically appropriate (like New England Revolution or Philadelphia Union), and--best of all--they call it a "soccer club." Not that I'm making an argument here for American cultural exceptionalism, but it just sounds weird in this country with its sports history, to call soccer teams "football clubs" (not least Euro derivations like "Sporting Kansas City" and "Houston Dynamo"; I feel "Real Salt Lake" comes closest as Utah was once part of the Spanish crown territory, though that's admittedly an awful reason). I wish there were an easy or dependable way for me to watch MLS games. I had a pass a couple of years ago and kept up pretty well, but that went to shit after I moved and I was charged anyway. I thought about renewing, but Ann Arbor just started its own soccer team last year (AFC Ann Arbor in the NPSL) and I found I was able to get my fix pretty good from those games (which happen maybe a half a mile from my apartment), even if one of the owners is a notorious, creepy douchebag. That said, I'll at least nominally support the Fire until Detroit gets an MLS team (which has been under discussion for years but I don't see happening any time soon).

Well espn, fox sports and the mls have a pretty solid deal. Each network as at least 1 game every sunday while i believe you can watch some of the other games online

The England v. Panama game was fun to watch. Pfft! The highs of successive scores before the half countered by the dour English "can't do" defeatism at the bar wherein I watched this morning. It's like you want to lose: The Cup, The Country, whatever.

We've had a terrible game against Mexico and then a slightly better one against Sweden. With the last second goal to win it there's some newfound enthusiasm to be found but overall the mood is:
"This is not Die Mannschaft of 2014 anymore but also not yet a new Mannschaft, it's an in between thing and we're not expecting too much this time"

We qualified very unenthusiastically for the round of 16 and no one's got their hopes very high.

Damn, for 80 minutes it looked like a sensational upset, Nigeria kicking Argentina out of the tourney and Iceland with a huge chance to make it too but in the end it's the before expected boring result: Argentina and Croatia win the group, Nigeria and Iceland are out.

To be fair being an England fan is basically being a Browns fan or Cubs (pre-WS) fan any time there's a flicker of hope it's snuffed out by something really stupid, be it a normally sane player temporarily losing their mind, diego maradona or refs missing something that leads to a rule change after the fact...
...then of course if anything actually nice happens then the hooligan contigent will make the rest of us look bad anyway.
It's going to be weird in 2026 to actually cheer for Canada in one of these things, and by cheer for Canada I mean pray that we score a goal.

Well, this is all around surprising. The Germans getting kicked out so early was not really that much of a surprise at is it's made out to be, still quite the shocker. But half through the 1/8 finals, with the exception of Brazil, France and (if you're being generous) England, all the usual suspects are out. Got a few bucks on Belgium of all teams but at this point it doesn't seem that much of a crazy bet anymore.
Predictions for today (since it went so well with my prediction of the german team's success, but actually glad they did not somehow weasel into the finals, that would have been even awfuller):
Brazil v Mexico: Brazil is doing their thing where they get slightly better with each game but manage to do so with the least effort. Mexico on the other hand had quite demanding games (well only the last two) and overall not the quality of Brazil, team as well as individual quality. Mexico has heart but Brazil soccer has Brazil soccer so I'd say this is a win for Brazil.
Belgium v Japan: Belgium's A team, which will be on the pitch today after the lame spare player's game is strong, very much so I think. Maybe not as strong as Brazil but against Japan, who only got into the finals via having less yellow cards than Senegal, this should be a win for Belgium. I even predict a decisive one.

My predictions were (mostly) right!
Brazil easily through, but Neymar shenanigans are a little annoying at this point.
Belgium did not have a decisive victory there but had an incredibe comeback. It shouldn't have even been necessary but Japan fought well and made the most of the few chances they had. That said they were on their last leg at the end of the match, if Belgium didn't score in the additional time, that would have been a hellish extra 30 minutes for Japan.
I'm calling it now: The quarterfinal Brazil v Belgium is the real final, whoever wins this also wins the World Cup!
