Didn’t seem so long I was writing about excess sandalwood oil on sidewalks... Hi again, here we have another Bob’s Burgers episode, this one is entitled “Sacred Couch” where the Belchers are torn between the love of their couch or a new one which Louise is determined to have... right up until she isn't.
I want to like this episode so badly; it has great lines, Teddy, Belchers working as one team, highchairs but yet... I don’t think it wants me to, like it knows it’s shitty but considers itself to have charm and character because it’s shitty. For whatever reason, it didn’t fit right with me because Louise’s turn of character felt odd, yeah she’s the beating heart of the Belchers in many ways but she’s most fun when she’s being the jerk. Here, it didn’t feel right with the crud couch somehow working itself back into the family because as has been proven several times they can’t have nice things but that’s okay, their not-nice things are at least theirs.
Bob’s Burgers has always been a show about stasis and how staying in one place can be better than moving, even if your place is fairly low. Linda cares about the couch as it holds memories far beyond the weird stains, mushed up cushions and that wet spot that never dries out and I get how losing that is such a big deal but I keep thinking it’s a bit too cavalier with how it makes both Linda and Louise flip from emotion to emotion in a way that feels iffy. Not big on the sappy chunks of Bob's Burgers to be honest.
Comedy-wise though, it’s very good with Wanda Sykes and Key and Peele giving great performances, great setups and lines hence why I have two specific lines highlighted though I could have many more. Also of note is the fact that the visuals still manage to be great following an entire conversation between an unstable Linda and a much beleaguered Bob from up above worked for the visuals and the story it told with Linda weaving her way through the store. Is it a good episode? It is right upto the point Linda finds out about Louise intentionally damaging the couch, bounces back a bit once the couch leaves but ultimately it’s okay and that’s okay.

C | Most of what I thought about the episode is up there, it’s my longest review so far but it did make me think and I really did feel a sense of dread when Linda found out the truth because you knew she’d want the couch and dammit, why can’t they just have something nice for once instead of self-sabotaging for the sake of keeping everything the same? |
