Vale, Mr. Nice.
Here's the bio I did for Sensi Seeds of him a couple of months ago: obviously needs a new ending.
Here's the bio I did for Sensi Seeds of him a couple of months ago: obviously needs a new ending.
Name: Howard Marks (aka 37 other false names, known as ‘Mr. Nice’)
Nationality: Welsh.
Born: 13 August 1945ce (as Dennis Howard Marks) in Brigend, Wales UK.
Biography:
Howard Marks is a noted cannabis advocate, author, and a former cannabis smuggler.
Marks was the son of a Merchant Marine captain and a teacher. He was raised a Baptist, later converting briefly to Buddhism.
He attended Balliol College, Oxford, reading physics from 1964-7. While there, he met musician and filmmaker Denys Irving (1944-76ce), who introduced him to cannabis. He studied teacher-training, later returning to Balliol to read philosophy of science.
His introduction to cannabis smuggling began on a small scale, assisting a friend to sell hashish. He met the Pakistani hashish wholesaler Mohammed Durrani, and began to organise large-scale hash transportation in the early 1970s. During his extensive career as a cannabis wholesaler, he became tangentially involved with several notorious underground figures, including members of MI6, the IRA and CIA.
He was arrested by Customs Officers for his part in importing £15 million of cannabis in 1980: he pled Not Guilty, concocting a defence that he was operating under the aegis of MI6. Although found Not Guilty on the cannabis smuggling charge, he was sentenced to two years for using false passports (including the Mr. Nice pseudonym, taken from the passport sold to him by convicted murderer Donald Nice). After serving only three months of a three year tariff, Marks was released. A year as a wine seller was followed by a return to cannabis smuggling: after several friends were arrested, he left the business in 1987, only to be arrested by the American Drug Enforcement Agency in 1988 on multiple charges of smuggling and racketeering. He served his seven year tariff in the notoriously violent Terra Haute prison in Indiana.
Following his release, he wrote several autobiographical books about his experiences, often touring to tell stories of his experiences. These ‘Evenings With Howard Marks’ secured his reputation as a charming raconteur.
Marks was diagnosed with inoperable colon cancer in January 2015: he continues to defy the expectations of his demise.
Family: Parents deceased: he married twice (to Ilze Kadegis (1967–now) and
Judy Lane (1980–2005) and has four children (Amber, Francesca, Patrick and Myfanwy).
Notable Works and Achievements: Marks has authored several book about his career as a cannabis smuggler, most notably Mr. Nice, which was filmed in 2010 (directed by Bernard Rose) with Rhys Ifans playing Marks.
Quotes:
"I am sure we were meant to take drugs because otherwise we wouldn't get stoned. I mean the fact there are all these receptors in the brain all ready to react to these things coming in would suggest some kind of semiotic relationship between animals and drugs that's being going on for several million years."
