So it has come to this, episode 14 entitled “The Hormone-iums” where Linda has her eyes set on financial success... and some main plot involving ol’ dumpyface Tina, it’s unimportant.
Usually I don’t go taking sneaky peeks over at AVC’s reviews to see what Alistair’s takeaway from it, mostly because I almost never agree with anything he says or even how the commetariat tends to feel. This week is no exception, Tina is strong-willed I’ll grant that but she is not the heart of the family, Louise is for varying reasons. Tina can however be determined as the will of the family, the one that gets things done as long as she’s suitably pep-talked out of one of her groan cycles. Another reason why I don’t is because more will be made of how I don’t agree with him than actually assessing the episode, this isn’t “Hippo reviews Bob’s Burgers reviews” after all so let’s just move onto the meat.
Tina’s story is an interesting one, a battle against never kissing again or being the lead soloist in The Hormone-iums on a story regarding mono and is perfectly befitting our proto-Gayle. As we know I do not like Tina, she lives a fantasy world of light and colour but exudes nothing of the sort and it’s a constant display of monotone emotionlessness disappointment, I don’t like her but I want her to still be better, I’m not a complete jerk. Her story just didn’t take me anywhere and I don’t really care because I’m assuming she has a crisis of emotion every week or more when we’re not looking because that’s who she is, a neurotic mess who’s trying to be better but never can be. As an A-plot it’s fine, does character beats well and expands on Tina a bit but she’s no Dina and I haven’t forgotten that she has no concept of kissing which isn’t opening your mouth and clamping it on someone like she’s giving CPR (that plotline appearing in season 7, possibly with her falling in love with the practice dummy?).
B-plot circles around the restaurant’s box of lost and found and a creation of Linda’s called a Wine Shoe, literally half a bottle of Chardonnay in a high-heeled shoe Marshmallow left behind and the potential success she could have... if the shoes weren’t expensive and had someone not got there five years earlier. The pitch to the Fischoeders was fun but low-key as was Tina’s story so I think if anything this is what I want... just less Tina focus.

B+ | Soul search might be done, I think I just like Louise and Linda based hijinks with Tina off someplace else, Gene along for the ride and Bob just as background straight guy, it works and I don’t think I watch to see our Tina growing up or the “family” stuff so cram your feels, cram ‘em good. |
