My laptop is four years old and frequently I hear rattling, tapping, or grinding inside. Please note that the battery pack probably exploded a year ago, as the mousepad was unusable for a good month, and that the CD/DVD drive is already crushed. How close is it to failing completely?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

One of the fans is probably damaged/unbalanced.

Either a fan is going up or your hard drive is.
Source: have had both of these things happen to me.

Have you checked it for snakes? I'm guessing fan, hard drive, or rattlesnakes. Since you say tapping and grinding as well as rattling, my first guess would be fan. Maybe broken or out of balance blade, or bearing going out. But always watch out for rattlesnakes. Devious little bastards they are.
Edit: If it turns out to be the fan, you want to get it replaced as soon as possible, or the CPU could overheat and give out. If it's snakes, they will look for a large rock somewhere on the motherboard to sun themselves on.

I think it's the fan. I just turned it on and it started rattling.
Further info:
My CD/DVD drive is crushed, and a year ago there was a two week period where my touchpad stopped working because something was bulging underneath it. I strongly suspect that my battery exploded.

I have concluded that my battery began swelling over a year ago. Unfortunately, the laptop is an old model with a fraying, obsolete M1 type cord, and I am unable to replace it. What is to be done?

Between these, you should be able to find a replacement power adapter and battery.

Ah, but the disk drive is already shot, and who knows about the fan. If I replace the battery, do you think they'll be okay?

If the fan is out, then anything you replace is going to have a pretty short life span. If you are dead set on fixing it, that should be your first step. Like Floyd Diabolical Barber said, if your fan is out, your CPU will overheat and then you will have to replace that too and probably the motherboard.

I have had very good luck finding used laptops. Now, the purposes I need a laptop for does not require it to be very fast or have the most up to date OS, so I have been able to seek out ones maybe a generation or two out of date, and still use them. If you are still able to do what you need with an older computer, then I would suggest you look into this possibility. It sounds to me like the one you have is on it's last legs. I think at this point it would cost more to make the laptop you have reliable than what a decent used one would cost. Oddly enough, because I need to use my laptop connect to various equipment for servicing them, some newish, some ancient, I have found that it's cheaper and somewhat more reliable for me to use an older computer because it has a built in serial port, instead of using a USB - serial adapter. Since I take my laptop out on the road, and since the last nice , new laptop I had got dropped off a room during an installation, the last few I have gotten were used ruggized laptops. I've had a couple of Itronix, and the latest one is a Dell, I think. (It's out in the truck, and I'm not running out there right now.). These have been quite affordable, and proved almost indestructible. I used each of them until they were so outdated that they just couldn't handle the latest software. I found most of mine on Ebay, although I got one at a traveling flea market that passed through a nearby town.

Okay, the rattling is nonstop. I'm taking it to Genius tomorrow.
EDIT: I ended up not doing this. The rattling has stopped, and the computer has begun to smoke.

Update: my laptop fan, after a week of getting progressively louder, finally conked out completely and the laptop won't even boot up. (Hence my scarcity around here the past several days). This is my work laptop, so I had to ship it in to get fixed. (FIXED, not replaced, despite falling apart in many regards).
