Also, several very fancy RVs that had names like Vengeance on the back.

The landlord of the unit next to mine, as soon as I walked outside. He's a racist, homophobic old jerk.

A skunk trying to drag a flattened rabbit across the road. I guess it makes sense that skunks would eat roadkill, but I always thought of them more as insectivores. Anyway, when I ran past this guy he reared up at me and hissed and bared his bloody fangs. Who knew those things were so vicious!

I read that as a shark trying to drag a flattened rabbit across the road.

Big yellow signs in downtown Pittsburgh, with arrows, that say things like "To set", "Extras", and "Catering". Somebody's making a movie!

A duck family and the babies were doing the hilarious "we can't fly yet, but we think you're going to eat us, so we're going to escape by running across the water while mom squawks to keep your attention!"

I always forget that not everyone in the U.S. has lightning bugs. It was surreal to be in California and not see any at all. I didn't realize how much I missed them until I realized they weren't there.

Last night as I drove past a neighbors house, I saw an owl perched on his mailbox.

Also saw peak redneck - you know those stick figure family stickers you see on the rear windows of cars? Imagine that, but instead based on that terrible Browning buck logo.

At work: I had to work out of a different office today, and this office had a lovely park with trails through a wooded area for me to get my lunchtime mile in. A little deer ran right by me and stopped! He was maybe 15-20 feet away. It's blurry because I was fumbling and racing for the phone because I didn't want to miss the shot. On my way home: A shaggy dude in a "don't tread on me" t-shirt riding down the highway on one of those late sixties Easy Rider long handlebar motorcycles. Right out of 1973.

I failed to take a picture, but on the highway across Washington the mile marker says 68.9. Things you have to do when not one but two universities' worth of students use the same highway all year.

We have a lot of rabbits I've seen on our street, but last week I saw a baby one for the first time: Driving along I90 to my parents, we passed under Bort Road before we crossed into New York.

Looking outside my bedroom window late at night, at the woods behind our property, the trees look like they're strung with thousands of flashing fairy lights. SO MANY LIGHTNING BUGS!

For my daughter, fireflies exist in that same maybe-they're-real, maybe-they're-not space as fairies, Santa Clause, and unicorns. Like, they are pretty unbelievable when you think about it.

For my daughter, fireflies exist in that same maybe-they're-real, maybe-they're-not space as fairies, Santa Clause, and unicorns. Like, they are pretty unbelievable when you think about it. Fireflies are totally bonkers. And I've lived in a part of the world with them for my whole life, but never saw anything like the woods behind my house until a few years ago. Like, I'd even been living at that house for a while before I happened to look out at, like, two in the morning on a June night and was astounded. It's like a fairy rave -- just seriously thousands of fireflies flashing away. Have they always been like that, and I never noticed? Because my thoughts of fireflies were "aww, lazy little light-up bugs on summer evenings, where you catch them when you're a kid because they're not creepy bugs, and they sometimes land on the windows and it's adorable watching them blink, and you see a few here and there and it's lovely." Not, "Holy shit, the woods are GOING CRAZY right now!"

About a half dozen Korean people of varying ages wearing 80s metal t-shirts. None of these people were together so it wasn't like a group going to some sort of 80s metal convention or anything, but over the course of the day I saw small children in Def Leopard t-shirts and grandmas in Iron Maiden shirts and housewives in Motley Crue shirts.

Driving yesterday on I-95 North, through Maryland -- an SUV with a bunch of bikes on a rack on the back. Just visible through the thicket of bike frames and wheels, the license plate that reads "CNN FAKE". Next to the license plate, a bumper sticker that says, "I don't trust the liberal media". Yeah, I got that from the license plate, buddy.

Two women taking their day care or summer camp class on an outing, leaving from the Jewish Community Center. One chaperone is at the front, the other at the back, holding either end of a long, blue leash. The children are bound to the strap by one wrist, six to a side, and the woman in front has to give the all stop when one of the kids has to re-tie her shoe. Like this, crossed with something out of Spartacus.

Cutting through the fairgrounds walking to work, someone passed me going the opposite direction in their car. A fluffy orange cat was standing on the center console with its paws on the driver's shoulder. As someone who very often takes long trips with a gigantic cat loose in the car, looking like an insane person as the cat sits on my lap and yowls wildly at the window, this greatly pleased me.
