I've been craving some action RPG for the past few weeks, and I don't have the hardware to run Fallout 4. So I picked up The Witcher, The Witcher II, and the first Dark Souls for a total of $10. Didn't realize that Dead Souls is practically unplayable with just mouse and keyboard, and I don't have a controller (though I guess it's finally time to get one). I've heard great things about the story and world-building of The Witcher series, but I just felt bored out of my mind in the first hour of gameplay and found the combat system clunky and unsatisfying. I'm feeling a bit burned. I hoping The Witcher picks up -- I know you can't judge that kind of game while you're still in the part that giving you tutorial instructions, but I'm not excited to fire it up again. It'll feel like doing work in order to get to a more fun experience. As someone who absolutely loves Witcher 2 and 3, the first game is ultimately kind of tedious and unsatisfying for much of its run.

Can one dive into 2 without fully knowing the story of 1? It only cost me like $1.99, so I don't need to sink 20 hours into a mediocre game just to get my money's worth if there's no other reason to.

Skyrim has been a pretty good purchase - you'll probably enjoy it if you like the more recent Fallouts. I got the whole thing for $20, but it might be less on Steam now.

Alas, I've already got and logged nearly 100 hours in Skyrim (and I still never actually finished the main storyline). I was interested in Dragon's Dogma (based on how it looked in a Monster Factory episode), but I think my hardware's too outdated for it. And I've got a game of Dragon Age: Origins going, but I set it down last autumn, and when I tried to pick it back up I had so little memory of what was going on and what I was supposed to be doing that I couldn't get back into it (it never grabbed me like it did some other posters here).

Actually, on the controller front, I might ask if anyone has any recommendations. It seems like the PS4 controller and either the Xbox360 or Xbox One controllers are generally considered to top of the heap. As a pretty entrenched PC/Microsoft user, I'm disinclined to go the PS4 route (and I might actually buy an Xbox console sometime in the future), but I just don't know if I'm can justify over $50 on a controller when I don't play that many controller-based games, but going for the 360 controller seems like bad future-proofing. Are the $15 generic controllers really a total waste? Would I be kicking myself for not spending $10 more and getting a quality (if outdated) product? I wish the Steam controller weren't getting such abysmal reviews, because it seems kind of interesting.

Far Cry (3) Blood Dragon is on sale for $7.50
If you haven't played it and you love terrible 80s movies you owe yourselves the combo meal price to pick it up.
Cheesy Dialogue, Big Guns, Laser Dinosaurs... simply amazing.

Given you can tailor the game to the controller and nothing that comes out for PC is going to tie you to any of the newer controller features I would just go with a 360 controller. Comfy, reasonably durable and compatible with a pretty much everything that uses a controller (and if it's not on launch you can bet there will be a third party patch.)

I got Witcher and Witcher 2 for like, $7 total. Are they any good? I know 3 has its fans. I love them both but they have their weird moments, what was once pretty revolutionary combat in the first one can feel pretty clunky now. So I played Witcher 1 for about 30 minutes and gave up. Yep, it was the combat. I can't believe it's my machine's fault, since it's three years older than when the game was made, but it's very choppy, slow, unresponsive. He walks around with his ridiculous sword held high over his head.

Tagentially related: Bundle Stars has an awesome bundle sale - 8 high-rated indie Steam games for $3.49. Current price for them all would be about $120, and all but one of them are rated "Very Positive" overall! (Grey Goo is "Very Positive" for recent reviews, but "Mixed" overall. Still looks good.) Indie Legends Sale!

On the one hand, the Steam Summer Sale has officially started.
On the other, the Steam website is completely overwhelmed and nothing will load. I'm not at home so I don't know if the Steam game servers are down too.
Great job, Internet!

Torchlight II is such a good game. I never played Hob, the latest from Runic Games. Looked neat, and a genre I like, but I've never seen a response more enthusiastic than "kinda cool."
The Torchlight series, though, and especially the second one, is just aces. Much as part of me wants indie devs to continue branching out, I could really go for a Torchlight III.

I haven't bought anything, and likely won't this go round, but standouts for me would be:
Crypt of the Necrodancer, $2.99 Pyre, $7.99 Prey, $14.99 Final Fantasy VI, $7.99 (I know people bitch about the sprites, but I think they're fine) Life is Strange, Ep. 1, Free Total Annihilation, $2.49 Enter the Gungeon, $7.49
There are no must haves here.

I dunno if the multiplayer is still going strong but yeah, it's fun as hell.

Prey for 15 seems like a steal, especially if it comes with the new expansion they just added(I think it is free?). I almost got it last week during the PSN E3 sale, but got Watch Dogs 2 and Nioh instead, but the next time it goes on sale I will likely get it.

I picked up The Binding Of Isaac, Thimbleweed Park, and Getting Over It. I debated Skyrim but I've put so much time into the Switch edition already, and I've heard mods don't work as well with the Special Edition.

Everyone probably has that one little endlessly replayable indie game they go to, and Isaac is mine. Just checked Steam and I have 128 hours played.

Terraria - 386.3 hours on record I have also bought something like 20 copies of this game during 4-for-$10 sales and given it away. One of my favorite indie games of all time, though I'm completely burned out on it now.

I've been playing moonlighter.
Will probably bite the bullet on the newer South Park game now that it's at sale price.
