I saw this in the cinema about 18 months ago. There was a stretch - Heywood Floyd traveling to the moonbase - where the audience was slightly restless, but they soon snapped back into place.

I think it's a movie with very dehumanised people (Floyd is a bit of a corporate nonentity, as Dellarigg alludes to) but it's engrossing to me even then.

The first few times I saw it, I thought it was criminally dull. So I certainly understand that viewpoint. But now, if I happen across it, I usually get hypnotized by it and watch it to the end. Although I do admit the journey through the monolith and Big White Room stuff at the end gets a little tedious.

I'm a pretty strong no, since the movie draws me in like few movies can, but I can also totally see how someone could find the movie to be unbearably dull. Very much a case of different strokes for different folks.
ETA: And while I love it high or sober, this is an excellent movie to watch stoned.

I've only seen it once. I would say not boring on the whole but admit that I was bored at times.

I do have to say one of the key turning points in my relationship was the movie was catching it while recovering from being doped up for a dentist visit.

The movie can be dull at times, but I suspect where you watch it plays a big impact. I've never seen it on the big screen with an audience, and I'm guessing the experience might be different than watching it at home on the TV.

It's a movie you absolutely have to choose to give your full attention to. If you go in to it looking for a diversion, it won't work. It would be like taking Aristotle's Nicomachaean Ethics to the beach and wondering why it wasn't keeping you awake.
