Oh, and I was most impressed by the way NBC managed to avoid asking Shaun White even one question about those sexual harassment allegations.

Also saw the Japanese defending gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu get all but mobbed by reporters. The Japanese guy who came in 2nd looked so good. But at one point I thought, "Was this guy even born when Shaun White first won a gold medal?" I had to look it up. Okay, yeah, obviously he was, since the event itself isn't older than the Japanese guy. But, that guy was 7 when Shaun White first won. He looked so dejected to come in 2nd. He's 19! Dude, just come back in 4 years. In fairness, he was probably hoping to improve on his silver medal from Sochi. When he was 15. No, I know he came in second in the 2014 Olympics, too. But, he's only 19! Scottie James is 23 and just won a bronze medal. Shaun White is 31. This guy, Ayumu Hirano, looked great! His skills are so impressive. He could easily have won the gold medal here. He did his absolute best. As long as he doesn't get seriously injured, I see no reason why he couldn't contend for the gold medal in 2022.

Desert Dweller Aksel Lund Svindal first became one of my Olympics crushes during the Vancouver games, thanks to NBC doing a whole gauzy "athlete overcoming big odds" feature about his catastrophic injury at Birds of Prey several years before that. NBC's clearly had the hots for him for a good, long time, and his lack of Americanness will not stop them from bringing him to our living rooms! And for that I'm grateful. He's such a dreamboat. Oh, I love Aksel Lund Svindal. (Whose name I misspelled earlier!) I think he's great. What a great skier. He's super funny. I love him. I remember him being featured in several previous Olympics. I just have low expectations of NBC covering foreign athletes. I figured they'd forget about him since there isn't a major American rival in his events anymore. I also thought it was hilarious that anyone thought he'd even attempt that slalom portion of the Combined event. He basically admitted this in that NBC interview. "I haven't done a slalom run in 2 years!.... We'll see how it goes." LOL, yeah right, Svindal. Sure. Got himself an extra practice run on the downhill course. And it paid off!! Gold medal in Downhill today. Bam! Well played, sir. I missed that event tonight. Going to try to go watch it now. Oh, if you want to see the Women's Halfpipe snowboard competition you can do full event replays on NBCOlympics.com. As long as you have a participating tv provider. This is how I watched the Men's Halfpipe yesterday, since I was live streaming the entire Pair's Skating Short Program at the same time the snowboard event was going on.

One other thing...I managed to stay awake last night to the end of the primetime coverage, and Not Bob Costas said that the Eastern and Central time zones were heading to local news, but coverage would continue for the Mountain and Pacific time zones. I live in the Central. What did we miss? I'm sure it wasn't much. I think I had the live coverage on at that time? The last few days they have been showing other sections of events they cut out of the primetime coverage. They may have shown more of the earlier Pair's Skating programs (the non-top teams). Sometimes they show some curling. I think I saw some speed skating one night? Basically it's either non-top competitors from events they cut in and out of during Primetime, or early runs/heats of stuff that is going on live at the time. **Actually, after thinking about it, during that EST/CST local news break, NBC may have aired some of the Men's Combined slalom runs?** Tonight I have the coverage on during the Eastern/Central local news break. They are airing the early runs of Run 2 of the Women's Giant Slalom. So, basically, the women who don't have a chance to medal. This is stuff that Primetime NBC would never air. They'll probably just let the Women's GS run until it's complete. Our local news likely won't air until around 1am. **Actually, they just confirmed this live. Yep, in the Mountain time zone tonight NBC is just airing the entire second run of the Women's GS in complete order. They said the rest of the country would be coming back in after the next break, after about 15 skiers have already gone. So, we got to see the entire competition! Woo!* This is actually better scheduling than NBC has had over the last few Olympics. I am mildly impressed by how much live coverage we're getting. I think it may actually be a benefit to be in the Mountain/Pacific time zones this time. Although, I did hear from the figure skating coverage that NBC pressured the IOC and Korean Olympic Committee into scheduling the figure skating competition in the morning so that NBC could air it in Primetime. Reminiscent of the Beijing Olympics when NBC pressured the committees into holding all the Swimming finals in the morning, producing a weird situation where the qualifying events were at night and the Finals were the next morning.

Sorry for the multiple posts. I don't know if there's a way to quote multiple people in one post.
Anyway, I watched the complete Pair's Skating free skate tonight. At least NBC allows you to live stream the complete events online. Put this one while I clocked some OT in the office tonight.
The American Pair's skaters are so sweet and fun. But, wow, they made errors on just about every technical element. Wish American skating had a stronger program for Pair's skating. It was cute to see all the really young pairs in the earlier group. There were a lot more technical errors throughout this round than there were in the short program. Too bad that Chinese pair made a couple of mistakes. But, wow! Amazing to see the German skater Savchenko finally win that Gold Medal. I've watched her over so many Olympics, never making it to the Gold medal. After the bronze medal in the last Olympics she looked so upset. Wow, it was amazing to see her win this time.
Watching the Women's Giant Slalom right now. Shiffrin is going right now......Woooo! She's got at least the Silver...... Final skier going now.... Shiffrin WINS! Woooo! Gold Medal! That was great! Thanks for showing us the entire round, NBC! Woo, all 3 of the medalists look so excited! Yay!
Edited: Damn, NBC doesn't have the full Men's Downhill replay posted yet. May have to wait until tomorrow. It does have the runs of the three medalists. Watched Aksel Lund Svindal's run. Wow, that was some wild skiing. The commentators were hilarious. For the first half, they're all, "Ooh, he doesn't look good. He's losing time!" Then halfway through, they go "Ooh, he's got speed now! Ooooh! Oooh! Oooh! OOOOOH! HE'S GOT THE LEAD!!" It was fun. Glad to see Sinvdal win that Gold medal. I know he's wanted it a long time.
Edit Again: Oh! And I also watched the second half of the Curling match between the women's teams from USA and Great Britain. I'm still not sure I fully understand curling. But I am having fun watching it and trying to figure it out for myself rather than going to look up the rules/scoring/etc. I liked this women's match much better than the mixed doubles I was watching earlier. That Canadian guy on the mixed double team came across as such an asshole. It was nice to watch women's teams where everyone was intense, but no one was screaming criticism at a teammate. Yay women!

My boss's now-retired boss insisted that the TV in the break room be permanently on CNBC because he had a lot of investments. 4 years ago, CNBC was the channel where NBC put most of its curling coverage, and I got to explain to my co-workers exactly what was going on.
I'm glad that it's finally time for Real Curling, not that weird 2-person variation. It is possible to have two men and two women on the same team.

I saw ladies iced hockey today live and in person. USA vs. Canada. Sitting in those stands I finally realized that in a bizarre way that the Olympics really do bring us all together. People were having conversations with and high fiving people who were prior to this event complete strangers regardless of what tiny flag they carried. No one cared what color or religion anyone was. Sure there were dueling chants at times but at the end of it all the Canadian Sihks with oversized Canadian flags who were attempting to rally their countrymen took pictures with the tow headed elementary school aged brothers who were attempting to do the same thing for the Americans and my daughter hailing from Seoul danced in the aisle and attempted to chant “USA” along with a toddler from New Orleans and small Canadians. All in all it was a great experience that probably would have been better if America won and also if my daughter hadn’t barfed on me in the car on the way there.

SQUEEEE! Aksel won the downhill! It's like it's 2010 all over again!
My take on NBC's presentation of the alpine skiing events is that Bode Miller is a terrible color guy. I mean, yes, he's got the baggage of being a loathable dick, but on top of that he's got a flat, reedy voice that isn't pleasant to listen to, and seems not to have much analysis to offer. I loved when, in the intro to the men's downhill, he informed us that Svindal was his pick to win the race, but that Beat Feuz was his favorite to win. So... they're both your favorites, Bode? It was quite satisfying, from the standpoint of hating him and wanting him to fail, when he droned on and on in an increasingly wet-splat of a joke attempt during the women's giant slalom about how being married makes it impossible to win, and then his broadcast partner was so silent for so long that you could almost hear the "seriously, why are you still talking?" look on his face. And then Miller had to apologize for it during the later race. Surely there are other retired American skiers NBC could have hired for this job.
Anyway, the figure skating! We didn't get to see any of the shittier pairs in primetime, but that's okay with me. (I was impressed by NBC's restraint when they didn't even bother showing us the adorable but lousy American pair.) The medal contenders brought the drama, so that was satisfying enough for the evening's programming, in equal measure with a lot of live skiing. Man, that German routine was astonishing in its perfection. And then it was stunning -- STUNNING! -- when the Chinese pair made so many mistakes, because I've been watching these athletes in competition for a grand total of about seven minutes, which makes me an expert. I was stunned! It was a little disappointing to see the space-android Russian pair show up in black-and-yellow polka dots, though. Based on my 150 seconds of previous exposure to them, I could tell that a polka-dot routine was not going to play to their really cool "alien mechanical life-force" vibe, and I was hoping to see one more routine upping the ante in the final group. Alas, it was not to be, and there was no stopping the annoying Canadians from medaling. Anyway, I loved when NBC showed us a little collage of shots of the German lady's previous Olympic appearances, giving us all a trip down memory lane. "Oh right! She's THAT woman!" (I'm sorry she ditched the Pink Panther routine.)

As a former amateur ski racer I really really hated that downhill (as did a lot of the competitors by the sounds of it.) Really slow, not steep enough etc.
Essentially just turned into another quasi technical ski. I guess that's what comes from purpose making a so-so ski area.

And wow, I'm not a huge fan of the Canadian Women's team that won our curling trials (Canada of course could send like 15 teams in women's or men's that can challenge for gold) but I sure wasn't expecting her to choke this badly. That first game was just awful.

I didn't hear the original joke (or if I did, I don't remember), but I did hear the apology that just went on and on and on and on. How difficult would it have been to just say "I said something inappropriate as a joke, it was stupid, and I'm sorry."? Instead, he rambled on for at least a couple of minutes. I agree, there are numerous retired American alpine medalists out there. Why get him?

Question though...
South Koreans are huuuge into short track speed skating (as you can tell by the fact that it's one of the only events they actually sold any tickets for locally.) Why then do so many Korean fans not seem to understand the rules of the sport?
I mean never mind the woman who got bumped up into Bronze in the 500m getting death threats because the Korean was DQ'd this time, they also get super busy whenever someone rightly gets dq'd even if it was the most blatant thing in the world. Not to mention the fact that in any of the large field races there always seems to be a korean team member who's only job is to make sure the star of his/her team wins.
Not that it matters much this time since all the short track is on at an unwatchable time for me.

I mean... I mean... look at his HAY." I had meant to say either "head" or "face", not sure which, but now I'm apparently disgusted by the product coming out of his hay farm? THIS IS WHAT CANADA'S FIGURE SKATERS REDUCE ME TO. (As for Adam Rippon, I find him extremely attractive and charming, but man. We are definitely starting to reach Maximum Rippon.)

The reason that there are so many people there and it’s being broadcast in prime time locally is because short track is the one sport Koreans generally and consistently do pretty well in. The people there aren’t generally fans of the sport in question just a fan of seeing their country win a thing. That’s why they don’t understand the rules and why Apollo Ono is still under a fatwa in South Korea. It’s not something that people follow outside of the Olympics or anything like that. This also applies to other sports like archery.

They were doing that with luge too and the first time I saw it my first thought wasn’t Mario Kart but rather, “It seems so dangerous to have these two dudes going down this track simultaneously,” since I didn’t realize it was a compare and contrast thing.

The Canadian Women's Curling team is a full on gong show at the moment. Literally anyone else from the Canadian trials would be 3-0 right now. I (an admittedly mega-amateur curler who skips) would have made that last shot at least 17 times out of 20, what a squandered gift.

I was off work this week and also got sick. Spending a lot of time in bed, it should have been the perfect opportunity to binge watch tbe Olympics. Or so I thought. The two big publicly funded channels (200 Euros a year, even if you don't own a tv) are sharing the broadcasts. This used to be really good, what wasn't on live on tv could be watched on their additional streams. These times seem to be over. The only live coverage seems to be of competitions where one or several Germans are expected to win a medal. (granted, that's quite a few). Around that however, it's just endless interviews, athlete home stories, and pieces about Korean culture. While there's live snowboarding and ice hockey and curling etc. After hours of this, they go "And now we're going live to ..., where after a riveting competition, the game ends/the decision is made in 30 seconds " just to spite the viewers. Now they're showing Curling. From 6 hours ago

I love when the TV replays downhill ski events by compositing together two runs. Just like OG Mario Kart. I absolutely love that too. When competitors are alone on the course, it can be awfully abstract to understand why this or that move cost the skier (or luger) time, even with the split times they put up at various points during a run. The overlapping video showing were the two skiers were at the exact same time in their runs makes it much clearer about what mistakes can do, and show how much of a gap being even a quarter of a second behind can open up.

So is this really a matter of "lol these dumb Koreans don't even understand the sport," or more a matter of a sport that people briefly become very invested in every four years leading to some really ugly overreactions when things don't go their way?
