“I want…I want to know that I’m gonna be fucking heard, that what I have to fucking say will matter, will have some result. ‘Cause if not…then what’s the fucking point?”
This is said by a Pinkerton right before he dies at Al’s hands, and it’s a pretty nice summation overall of Hearst’s situation in this episode (not to mention the fact that this Pinkerton is Hearst’s messenger). Hearst is lashing out in all directions, trying to make sure his power and influence is heard throughout Deadwood, but what’s the fucking point if he can’t get much of a rise out of anyone? The camp is the most unified it has ever been, after all, and we see that in its smooth response to the shots taken at Alma. The fact that Al jumps down from his balcony and ushers her away in the manner that he does already gives him a victory against Hearst, and it’s also a nice way to demonstrate that Al has no qualms about jumping down from his perch to help his fellow townsfolk.
Add onto that the fact that he figures out what exactly the intent was behind the shots, allowing Alma to just walk back out there to her destination. It’s an incredibly tense sequence that stands in contrast to the tone of the other crosstown walks this season, but in a way, it’s just as effective at emphasizing unity. When you place it in context regarding Hearst’s efforts and the history between Alma and Al, you realize just how significant a moment it is. Plus, she’s walking to the bank, a central community location just like the schoolhouse (the subject of the last episode’s crosstown walk).
This all works like a charm on Hearst. Of course they would on a guy who says this: “Elections cannot inconvenience me. They ratify my will or I neuter them.” If your best show of strength is spitting on E.B.’s face, then maybe you aren’t doing so well. We only have two episodes left, and it’s time to see whether humanity can ultimately win out over the diminishing force that is George Hearst.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
-Cocksucker count: 7
Total cocksucker count: 281
– “We want him sitting, sulking like a three-year-old whose toys won’t do his biddin’.” “I had a fucking Jack-in-the-box. I’d turn and turn and turn that fucking handle, and the Jack, he’d never jump.” “If she’d complete her walk to the bank…she’d confound this motherless cunt.”
-Once again, a wonderful scene at the end between Jane and Joanie, and a wonderfully delivered monologue by Robin Weigert.
-Al to Jewel as she’s walking upstairs: “Every step a fuckin’ adventure.”
– “Perhaps then, rather, at this moment you are Socrates to my Alcibiades, taken it upon yourself to edify me.” “Are you saying you want to fuck me?” “What?” “Well, you keep calling yourself Alcibiades to my Socrates. Are you proposing some sort of homosexual connection between us?” “I forgot that part of the story.”
