Once upon a time long ago, when repulsionist was sure the world had enough books and he had enough time..bam, the glasses break. At a loss without my glasses, I picked up the nearest trade print because of the beautiful woman in white I could make out. At least I could see something worth thinking about. I used to order books from Church of the SubGenius. I used to order books from Loompanics. I no longer have these precious documents. They moulder in used bookstores, or stand happily shelved in someone's home lab (looking at you, Psychedelic Chemistry). But, the place I most preferred to order books from in the 1990s was Amok. The dispatches compiled by Stuart Swezey and Brian King stand as sharp microliths waiting to be uncovered in the sands of time by a newly-minted Vice editor's foot. They collected for order the "other" reading material on the planet at the time. From the above dispatch I learned of people like Isabelle Eberhardt, Georges Bataille, James Carr, and a host of other lesser-knowns guiding culture to its expansion and into/out of backwater paths. If you were the kind of kid who loved poring over catalogs, this set of dispatches is worth your while.

Bought a bunch of mad shit from it, from SubGenius materials to dumb conspiracy shit to wacky guides on how to drink H2O2 for better health (which, no I never tried). Sorely missed.

Upvote for Eberhardt, one of those amazing women who deserves to be better known. I made the mistake of choosing a story of hers to translate for a French project and while her prose is great (and a surprising amount is untranslated) it was also beyond my sophistication at the time.
