Dark Matter was so generic, it's not even worth calling shite. Cliches include; Oriental person whose sole characteristic is 'taciturn martial artist' (and whose cabin is literally decorated only with weapons) and cute geek/hacker girl with - wait for it - coloured hair.
Only high point is Canadian sci-fi trouper Roger Cross playing someone cheerful for once.

God I love Continuum. And I note the trailer is tagged with 'SyfyFriday'; as that day's the one where they've been airing the sci-fi trifecta of Defiance, Killjoys and Dark Matter in the US. I guess they're continuing to think of it as a sci-fi block of programming? Maybe the Expanse will wind up there? Either way they're really doubling down on genre programming, and particularly stuff I like, so I'm not complaining. Speaking of Dark Matter, I sometimes feel like one of the few people watching it - which I understand, frankly - but I've been rather liking the most recent string of episodes; the show has a pretty good handle on its ensemble, a not completely ridiculous view of the relationships between the cast, and it indulged in a particularly wonky far-transit clone-yourself shenanigans with a light corporate humour touch. It could use more of that - the show keeps saying that basically the galaxy is dominated by corporations (except the feudal Japanese monarchy that of course the Japanese guy is from... * cough*) but it's not done a lot very interesting to show that; in part, admittedly, because it's been a pretty shipbound program. The episode probably had the perfect contrast between the Syfy's channels aspirations and budget, too, it featured a space station that looked like this: But the interiors looked like - and for all I know, were shot at - a Canadian mall.

Dark Matter has been renewed. I've unapologetically enjoyed this show; among other things it's had a good use for Wil Wheaton that's very far removed from his Wesley Crusher days (and a use for David Hewlett that plays rather deliberately on the kind of exasperated jackass he did so well as Rodney McKay.)
Also, Killjoys has been renewed.
No word on Defiance.

Mrs David Tennant He's not a regular; his scenes are also all on a screen (as none of the characters ever meet him in person.) This said as the show is written by Stargate alumni I think Atlantis fans are the ideal Dark Matter viewers.

All caught up on Dark Matter (except for tonight's episode), and I am disgracefully in love with this show. Also, the obvious increase in production budget has only made it better. When I realized we were actually getting establishing shots - that look amazing - with full planets and cityscapes in the background, I may have started giggling in joy. This show is starting to feel like it has Farscape-level potential.

Abzora Roryanaz: I'm almost done with S1 of Dark Matter on Netflix. I gotta say, with this and Continuum, I am becoming a big fan of Canadian sci-fi shows. dark matter rules! the fight chor. alone is the best i have seen in a long time, and the storytelling is smart, playing just enough with expectations.. great cast, highly rec.

So I've created a thread for Dark Matter, consolidating the conversations from a number of other threads. Remember to use the

tags, as some people may just be catching up on what is really quite an entertaining Canadian genre show.

I just finished the first season on Netflix today. I like it a lot! With this and Continuum, I'm definitely a fan of Canadian sci-fi shows now. I agree that seeing Roger Cross as a nice guy is a cool change too. And Ruby Rose's appearance was fun. And the Android is a great character, though I really hope she starts fucking keeping an eye out for people about to shoot or stun her at some point! So season 2 gets better, from what y'all are telling me?

So season 2 gets better, from what y'all are telling me? Oh, my, yes. They shake up the show in some pretty interesting ways, and has pushed into some stranger territory story wise. One of the most fun shows this summer, frankly.

Watching the season two finale next week, but heard some rumblings in the fandom it puts the pedal to the metal. I saw the penultimate episode on Monday, and while I was expecting something, I wasn't quite expecting that, so good job, show.

Sounds like I need to give S2 a try then. S1 interested me just enough to see it thru, glad to hear it gets better. I felt potential there, but the acting early on was dreadful, and the writing merely serviceable. But there was improvement even within S1, so I'm all for giving this another chance.

Yeah, season two was pretty darn good, and had a lot of unexpected "oh shit" moments.

Season 2 was fucking awesome! I remember it dragging a little in the middle third, but when that show is on its game, it is ON.

I started watching this because I trust you nerds' opinion on this stuff, and gods it is fun! It was so dumb at first, but it got a lot better. I'm halfway through season 2 and I kind of miss, well, you know who. Bland as he was.

I just finished this and wow that was one hell of an ending. Season 3 can't come soon enough.
