So for WHO KNOWS WHAT REASON, today some of my thoughts are with using artwork - music, literature, dank memes, etc. - as consolation. Not necessarily comfort food type stuff. But the healing kind - art which can help you put a spirit back together, climb back up, and get goin'. So maybe we can post two kinds of things here: 1. some of the artwork we use to lift our spirits and heal 2. more philosophically, if/how that process works for us This morning on Twitter I chatted with Desert Dweller about how I was getting over a bad mood by listening to Mahler's Second Symphony. For those not familiar, it's about 90 minutes long, and the first 20 are tremendously depressed, angsty, and stormy, but the last 20 (especially the amazing, world-stopping last 5) are an explosion of hope and light. I need to start on the lowdown, inconsolate level that my emotions are currently at, if they're gonna have any chance of getting lifted. She had kind of the opposite feeling. So - when you're depressed, are you consoled by artwork that's also depressing? Or by traditional "uplifting" stuff? Or by a long journey from darkness to light? Or Spaceballs? Or all of the above? And since we're also posting things we find consoling, here's the full symphony: And just the ending, if you're impatient (bonus: Lenny!!) (if you're REALLY impatient, skip to 2:22 but that's it - the rest is mandatory):

It's been all punk and metal since the news broke for me. I can't deal with anything other than the angriest of music right now. Last night while doing dishes an ill advised iPhone shuffle mode lead to me weeping while scouring a pan when a lullaby that had been on my phone for Babyviking popped up. A goddamn lullaby made me cry.

The Clash are the only band that matters at times like these. Maybe not White Riot or I'm So Bored With The USA, though - or maybe they'd be perfect, who knows. English Civil War was good for Brexit, anyway.

Although I'm still conflicted by the ending. The triumph is so excessive that it feels to me like it's supposed to be ironic.

I don't know if I have exactly the opposite feeling. It is more that I am so depressed right now that even this work would not be able to lift my spirits. The depressing section would probably reduce me to sobbing. And I don't think I could ever come back from that. With all due respect to Lenny and Mahler. This is a gorgeous work. I have performed it, actually. It is beautiful and intense. I am not sure any music could help me right now. A book might be able to, though.

I've been digging through @dril's archives. Something about the absurdity of the whole thing resonates, I guess.
This is basically what the election was:

When I feel like sorting my shotguns by barrel flavor, this usually helps. I find it to have a calming, almost pain relieving effect.

Ah, I see my music thread is halfway redundant! Apologies. Maybe it can just be for protest more exclusively, then.
