I may have evinced a certain fondness for weird, wonky French comic space opera here occasionally, so, obviously, I am looking forward to Luc Besson's adaptation of one of the best known French sci-fi sagas (one that was a notable influence on the Fifth Element.)
It looks like a pretty loose adaptation, the title referencing Empire of a Thousand Planets but the plot descriptions seeming a bit more Ambassador of the Shadows, but that's definitely a good idea - these are old comics and they could use a remixed, 21st century vibe.
Cara Delevingne seems excellent in this trailer - coldly angry when telling Valerian "You flirt, I smile" and decidedly pissed off when throwing down the punches. If cutting the 'et Laureline' from the title wasn't a great sign, the trailer at least suggests Laureline will be the co-equal she deserves to be.

This looks really fun, but "Because" in the trailer? Really?
I think I'm just sick of hearing pop songs in trailers at this point. I can't tell if it bothers me more or less than the summers of BRAAAAAHHHMMM.

I have never liked "The Fifth Element" and got too bored to finish "Lucy" both times I tried (hey, this isn't the Unpopular Film Opinions thread!), but this looks really good. I'm OK with "Because" in the trailer just because I like it and am impressed that someone put up that kind of cash.

It may be a little bit on the foolish side, but it's great fun. Same goes for Lucy. I never heard of this though, it looks interesting enough.

I'm liking what I've seen. I'm hoping that this indicates that Besson is finished dicking around and is ready to make good shit again.

Cinebooks will have completed translating the whole run in time for the movie, too.

thanks for the heads up! I've been meaning to see if these would get better availability with the movie coming out.

Cinebooks will have completed translating the whole run in time for the movie, too. That's great. I didn't realize they were working on them for so long - I have vague memories of reading some of these in high school, but I may have just thumbed through untranslated versions of them. Forbidden Planet had a lot of import Metal Hurlant / Humanoïdes Associés / Euro sci-fi stuff. I can't remember if Valerian was in any of the US magazines, though.

Celebith There have been previous translations of individual Valerian albums (like Ambassador of the Shadows, whose world space station is clearly a reference for this film), what's different about Cinebooks is that since the early 2010s they've been working through the whole series from scratch.

I just watched the Space Mutiny episode of MST, so I can't take "Valerian" seriously.

This feels like it is going to be a good movie that does a lot of interesting things and should be a breath of fresh air for blockbuster movies, but will not even make its budget back.

So I’m guessing omitting the “& Laureline” from the title is some Hollywood BS, right?

So I’m guessing omitting the “ & Laureline” from the title is some Hollywood BS, right? She didn't get added in the title in the comics until a few years ago, but it's less a Hollywood BS thing than a whatever the French equivalent of Hollywood BS is.

New trailer today mostly about Besson talking about the film's relationship to the comics and so on.

Why did this Besson guy make a whole movie about boron?

Perhaps it's about the Roman emperor Valerian. It could be about the last years of his life that he spent enslaved as the living footstool of King Shapur of Persia. A sort of classical era 12 Years a Slave. Then when he dies his corpse is stuffed and put on display and it turns into Weekend at Bernie's.

I hope this makes enough money internationally for 'them' to do another movie, or TV series or something. It wasn't great, but it was fun enough.

The first 5 minutes or so are in the running for my favorite sci-fi sequence of all time. About the rest of the runtime, the less said the better. I finally saw it and definitely agreed (though I also really like some other short segments.) It's pretty but definitely too far on the dumb end of things for me.

Good God, did Dane DeHaaaaaaaan suck the life out of this movie. He sounds like a depressed, asthmatic cancer patient, but not as energetic. What the hell was Besson thinking? Is this like that thing where stand ups will alienate the audience so they can try to dig their way out of the hole? Does he just hate the character? Did he lose a bet?

Dane DeHaan was terribly miscast in this movie. He's a lot better in other roles, mostly involving him being slightly creepy or depressed, yeah. Swashbuckling hero he is not. And he had no chemistry with Cara Delevingne whatsoever. I was really disappointed by this movie.

My daughter loves this movie and made my wife take her to Best Buy so she could buy it with her own money, even. She's been watching it every night since.

I love looking at most of it, but the leads are so miscast, and the 'romance' between them is forced and unearned. Hearing DeHaan's wheezy delivery of everything just kills me, though. ETA - Are there any good extras, or commentary tracks? I'd like to listen to them talk about making the movie.

Yeah, I like the idea of the movie far more than I liked the movie. DeHaan didn't really bother me too much, since I'm not sure anyone could be convincing with that script, which definitely needed a few more rewrites. Good eye candy, though.
