It's Christmas Eve, and the first night of Hanukkah (your spelling may vary), and it's almost Kwanzaa, and smack dab in the middle of what Google tells me is Yule! So let me be the first to say to all of you, happy holidays, and thanks everyone for being fun and friendly and only occasionally oversharing except in the shoutbox Where All Is Permitted And Nothing Is Forbidden. Whatever your preferred holiday, this is the thread for hoping everyone enjoys it. It being Christmas, I'm going to be awkwardly earnest and stuff and say Merry Christmas, and "may the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, keep your hearts and minds, through Christ Jesus." And I hope that whatever you're celebrating, it's as cool as Snoopy playing jazz guitar.

Happy Holidays, y'all. Relaxing at home, about to watch Alastair Sim play Scrooge while working through port, eggnog and coffee. Hope everyone has a pleasant and enjoyable weekend.

Annual update: The scene in the 1951 film of A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim as Scrooge, where Scrooge shows up at Fred's party, still has the power to make me bawl, and this time without any ex-girlfriend-related miasma lingering about (and admittedly without the goofy-ass OK Cupid lady texting you to go for a walk at that exact same second, but then it was Christmas Eve, not Christmas Night as last year). Just for the record. "A polka! A polka!"

I am very grateful for me very generous inlaws but this is a semi hilarious problem. I ask for something specific and my MIL decides it's not nice enough. I asked for a pair of earrings that match a necklace I already have, faux pearl drops, maybe $25. Instead she gives me a fancier pair of real pearl and silver earrings that aren't quite what I wanted and cost 2-3x as much. They're beautiful but I'm not sure they match my necklace!

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all! I hope your weekend has been relaxing and drama-free so far. Personally, I'm just here for the mango bellinis.

Currently upstairs hiding from the incessant crush of humanity at my inlaws' for Christmas. A conservative estimate places the number of people here at 45 and they're all loud and at any time any of them might start talking about politics and I may never go downstairs again.

Just for the record. "A polka! A polka!" I came here to post a clip of that very scene, as it is one of my all time favorites. Everything about it is amazing. I , too, cannot watch it without tearing up. The fact that the servant girl who opens the door reminds me of a girl I knew in high school Is a tiny part of it, but mostly, it's because it reminds me that there is always hope, even for pig-headed old fools like me. I had never thought of this as a Christmas song until I heard Daniel Johnston declare it to be one, but now it makes perfect sense. Through the holidays, and throughout the year, may all your days be filled with hope and happiness. May true love find you in the end. You guys are the greatest.
