While driverless cars are taking all of the attention here and elsewhere, this is the automotive news that's angering me this week. Right now it's sort of a novelty prototype, but someday all of license plates will be digital screens rather than metal plates. Yes, mostly for tracking purposes. Thoughts?

I can see maybe if a car is stolen, but why else? It's the first I've heard of it so I'd need to read the reasoning behind it to have an opinion. Seems awfully expensive though when the old system has been working fine for so long and is a piece of stamped metal.

Not only is this unnecessary, but it's going to spawn a new industry of tricked out/obnoxious personalizations (and worst of all, license sound effects).
