I was working on a file, a TextEdit file that I've probably had for years, and then suddenly it disappeared as I was typing in it. I mean, disappeared entirely from the computer, as if it never existed. No saved versions, no temporary files, nothing anywhere.
What the hell happened to it? Is it just gone forever for no reason?
This is on a Macbook running Mavericks, if that matters.

Disappeared as you were typing in it? Meaning the application crashed? When you reopen the application, is it listed under 'Open Recent'? You could download a data recovery program that allows you to identify for free if a lost file is recoverable.

I guess it crashed, but TextEdit has crashed before and then automatically reopened whatever I was working on. This just disappeared, like it never existed. The whole TextEdit program disappeared at first, but I rebooted the computer and it was there again. But this one file is still gone without a trace, it's not in "open recent" or anywhere else as far as I can see.

I've never encountered that problem before. I'd suggest downloading a couple of data recovery programs and running a scan to see if you can find it. You might also try searching for a word in the file in Finder in case it was somehow renamed. If worst comes to worst it might well be possible for a technician to locate it. I've heard it said that it's better to do that sort of thing as soon as possible since continued use of the disk will force overwriting of existing files.
