I definitely clicked this one to read this story.When I think of the words "invasive species" my mind never pictures a species that is quite THAT BIG. By the time I got to the part about hippo poop leading to toxic algae bloom I began to feel great sympathy for the local authorities who are trying to put a stop to this problem.

Not to derail a funny headline, but river otters ain't nothing to fuck with. Back when I volunteered at a children's science museum, we had occasional presentations from local educational otter handlers. In talking with them, I learned that they imprint like crazy on whomever (otter or human) raises them from pups and are outright aggressive to most anyone else, and their teeth are like razors. |

I clicked this link because I was very confused. It is St. Petersburg, Florida. And this Uhuru Movement, which has a separate explainer article linked in the above one, is "an activist arm of the African People’s Socialist Party".

Omali Yeshitela, a longtime leader of the St. Petersburg Uhuru Movement says, ”They have accused us of taking money from Russia,” at a news conference Friday afternoon. “We’ve never taken (money) from the Russian government. But I’m not saying that because I’m morally opposed from taking money from Russians or anyone else who wants to support the struggles for Black people.”

Something something Uhuru and Checkov...... Only tangentily related, back in the days before I had pause and rewind, in one of the original cast Star Trek movies, I thought I heard Scotty say a throwaway line that made it sound like he and Uhuru were going on vacation together somewhere. It was never mentioned again, and I'm sure I simply misheard the line, but I thought it was cool, so it's been head canon to me ever since that they went to Yellowstone or Remulon Four or something together once. |

Made sense to me. There was a big stunt at the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London games in which a stuntman was used to portray Queen Elizabeth parachuting into the stadium. (It was a James Bond parody.) And said stuntman was arrested for assaulting a girlfriend. ...I presume. I didn't click the article. |
