This is what I put: I took a "If I absolutely had to watch something from that year, would would I say the most often" approach. I used Wikipedia to source movies, and I'm pretty sure I missed some, but I'm old, and this took forever.
1975 - Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1976 - The Outlaw Josey Wales (I guess. This was a weak year) 1977 - Star Wars (I don't even need to look) 1978 - Superman 1979 - The Muppet Movie/Life of Brian/The In-Laws 1980 - Empire Strikes Back/Flash Gordon 1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark 1982 - Wrath of Khan 1983 - Return of the Jedi 1984 - Repo Man/Ghostbusters 1985 - Real Genius 1986 - Big Trouble in Little China 1987 - Princess Bride/Raising Arizona 1988 - They Live/Die Hard 1989 - UHF 1990 - Gremlins 2 1991 - Defending Your Life/Star Trek VI 1992 - Unforgiven 1993 - Army of Darkness/Nightmare Before Christmas 1994 - Pulp Fiction 1995 - Toy Story 1996 - Fargo 1997 - LA Confidential 1998 - The Big Lebowski 1999 - Galaxy Quest 2000 - O Brother Where Art Thou?/Best in Show 2001 - The Royal Tenenbaums 2002 - Blade II/Catch Me if You Can (this was the weakest year in a while) 2003 - Return of the King (I guess. This was another year with not a lot) 2004 - Shaun of the Dead 2005 - Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang 2006 - Crank 2007 - Zodiac 2008 - Wall-E 2009 - Up 2010 - Scott Pilgrim 2011 - Captain America 2012 - Cabin in the Woods 2013 - Iron Man 3 2014 - Guardians of the Galaxy/The Lego Movie 2015 - Mad Max: Fury Road 2016 - Rogue One, I guess, though there's a lot I haven't seen

Confidential 1998 - The Big Lebowski 1999 - Rushmore 2000 - Pitch Black 2001 - Ocean's 11 2002 - The Two Towers 2003 - Lost In Translation 2004 - Ocean's 12 2005 - Pride and Prejudice 2006 - Stranger Than Fiction 2007 - Ocean's 13 (this was an absurdly good year for movies and I don't like any of them as much as Ocean's 13 because I am not an aesthete.) 2008 - Hellboy 2 2009 - Up 2010 - The Social Network 2011 - The Tree of Life 2012 - Django Unchained 2013 - American Hustle (second-toughest year after '07) 2014 - The Grand Budapest Hotel 2015 - The Big Short 2016 - La La Land

For the record, if 1990 doesn't = Goodfellas, I don't look at the rest of your choices. Over and out.

I did this the last time but I'm doing it from scratch again, that list is null and void. Some of these I've only seen once and barely remember but I know I liked them.
85 - Back to the Future 86 - Blue Velvet 87 - Raising Arizona 88 - Die Hard 89 - Do the Right Thing 90 - Goodfellas 91 - Beauty and the Beast 92 - Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me 93 - Jurassic Park 94 - Pulp Fiction 95 - Apollo 13 96 - Fargo (damn I really wanted to say Trainspotting, toughest one yet) 97 - Boogie Nights 98 - Saving Private Ryan 99 - Being John Malkovich 00 - Best In Show 01 - Mulholland Drive 02 - LOTR: The Two Towers 03 - LOTR: Return of the King 04 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 05 - The 40-Year-Old Virgin 06 - Children of Men 07 - There Will Be Blood (really wanted to say Walk Hard or Hot Fuzz though) 08 - In Bruges 09 - Inglourious Basterds 10 - The Social Network 11 - Margaret 12 - Cloud Atlas 13 - Her 14 - The Grand Budapest Hotel 15 - Mad Max: Fury Road 16 - Arrival 17 - Get Out as of 3/25
Notes -Grand Budapest Hotel is the only Wes Anderson to show up despite it being my 4th favorite of his at the most -Fellowship of the Ring is the best LOTR movie but the only one that's not my favorite of its year

I'm only going to scan the top 50 movies for each year on IMDB to make this:
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983) The Terminator (1984) - helluva year, this one. Back to the Future (1985) Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) - suck it, Aliens! Predator (1987) Beetlejuice (1988) - oof, also a helluva year. Sorry, Roger Rabbit. honey i shrunk the kids (1989) -, not in the top 50, but I had to go back and replace Dead Poets Society. Also Raiders > Crusade Goodfellas (1990) - more tough choices. I wanted to say Edward Scissorhands but then @dellarig wouldn't read my post The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - you were pretty close, Hot Shots! My Cousin Vinny (1992) - this isn't getting easier The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) - over Groundhog Day, another crazy Bill Murray snub Pulp Fiction (1994) Braveheart (1995) - I'm trying not to think to hard about theses anymore. The Birdcage (1996) Good Will Hunting (1997) The Big Lebowski (1998) The Matrix (1999) O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Spider-Man (2002) Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004) The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) The Prestige (2006) - the only movie on this list more than a couple years old I have only seen once There Will Be Blood (2007) - easy choice, but helluva year The Dark Knight (2008) Coraline (2009) Inception (2010) Moneyball (2011) Wreck-It Ralph (2012) Iron Man 3 (2013) - YOU HEARD ME Edge of Tomorrow (2014) - over Whiplash??? Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) Doctor Strange (2016) - yeah this is territory where I haven't seen much yet Logan (2017)
And there we are. Closest call of all was probably Beetlejuice/Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. Going through, I can't believe the things I actually saw in the theater vs. what actually came out.

My definition of favorite, in each case in which there was a tie, is which one I am likelier to dvr every time it's on and actually watch it within the week ... and maybe keep it on the dvr forever. Even if I own it. Except in the case of 1983, because I refuse to choose.
1969: Bambi Meets Godzilla 1970: Scream and Scream Again 1971: Harold and Maude 1972: Tales From the Crypt 1973: American Graffiti 1974: Young Frankenstein 1975: Jaws 1976: Rocky 1977: Star Wars 1978: Grease, but Halloween nearly took it 1979: Rock N' Roll High School 1980: The Empire Strikes Back 1981: Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains (this movie was god damn everything when I was 13 or 14) 1982: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan 1983: Return of the Jedi/The Outsiders (I refuse to choose and you can't make me) 1984: Footloose ... that was a rough year to pick from 1985: Desperately Seeking Susan 1986: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 1987: Withnail and I 1988: If I have to pick something, Beetlejuice 1989: When Harry Met Sally 1990: Goodfellas 1991: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 1992: Death Becomes Her 1993: Dazed and Confused 1994: nothing comes close to being a favorite. we'll call this a penalty for 1983 1995: Clueless 1996: The Usual Suspects
Good Lord, I've lived a long time
1997: Titanic, because I'm always riveted by watching the ship go down. 1998: Practical Magic 1999: Dick 2000: Almost Famous 2001: I've been up and down the list on wikipedia three times. No favorite. 2002: Chicago 2003: Down With Love 2004: Shaun of the Dead 2005: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang 2006: Marie Antoinette 2007: Zodiac 2008: Burn After Reading 2009: Sherlock Holmes 2010: The King's Speech 2011: Captain America 2012: Moonrise Kingdom 2013: Art of the Steal 2014: X-Men: Days of Future Past 2015: Kingsman: The Secret Service 2016: Doctor Strange 2017: Guardians of the Galaxy 2, so far

2001: I've been up and down the list on wikipedia three times. No favorite. That's interesting. 2001 is actually the most competitive year for me, between Mulholland Drive, Spirited Away, Kairo, Amélie, Metropolis (the anime), Hedwig and the angry inch, Lantana, Millennium Actress, Read my lips... A good quarter of my top 20 movies of all time are 2001 movies. Also, Bambi meets Godzilla is the crossover I didn't know I wanted...

Boy, this turns out to be very hard. Comparing movies of different genres and deciding which one is my favorite is rough. But anyway, here is my list. And anyone whose list starts after 1990, please stay off my lawn. 1972: The Godfather 1973: The Sting 1974: Chinatown (but Godfather 2 and The Conversation would win many other years) 1975: Monty Python and the Holy Grail (there are probably some better movies, but I haven't seen them) 1976: Network 1977: Star Wars 1978: Animal House (although I really should watch The Deer Hunter at some point) 1979: Alien (although I go back and forth between that and Apocalypse Now) 1980: Airplane! (duh!) (Although Empire Strikes Back and The Stunt Man could easily win some other years) 1981: Chariots of Fire, but so hard to compare to Raiders. 1982: The Thing (although, The World According to Garp is right up there. It's hard to decide between such different movies). 1983: The Right Stuff 1984: Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo (I kid, of course. But Buckaroo Banzai, This is Spinal Tap, Top Secret!, The Karate Kid, Amadeus, Ghostbusters, *and* The Terminator? How can I pick from that group?) 1985: Clue, I guess? Maybe Back to the Future. All of the movies I listed above for 1984 are better than any of the 1985 movies I've seen (OK, maybe not Breakin' 2. Maybe.) 1986: Hoosiers, maybe? There's a lot of films I like this year (Aliens, Stand By Me, Ferris Bueller, Big Trouble in Little China), but nothing sticks out as obviously my favorite. 1987: The Untouchables (but maybe Princess Bride or RoboCop) 1988: Die Hard 1989: The Killer 1990: Goodfellas (and not just to get Dellarigg to read my list) 1991: Beauty and the Beast, I guess. It's been awhile since I've seen Naked Lunch or My Own Private Idaho, but I remember liking both of those way more than anyone else I knew did. 1992: Hard Boiled (Am I the only John Woo fan here? Do you all really think Reservoir Dogs is the better movie or have you just not seen Hard Boiled?) 1993: Jurassic Park (although Groundhog Day is right up there). 1994: Pulp Fiction 1995: Toy Story 1996: Fargo 1997: Jackie Brown 1998: Big Lebowski 1999: Being John Malkovich, although I should watch both that and All About My Mother again and compare if I want to be definitive. 2000: Can't decide between Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Best in Show. Again, two dramatically different movies makes it hard to compare. 2001: Amélie, edging out Y Tu Mamá También. 2002: 25th Hour, I think. Although both Adaptation and Talk to Her could easily win some other years. 2003: Lost in Translation 2004: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2005: A History of Violence, Thank You For Smoking, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are all potential choices here. None would win almost any other year. 2006: Pan's Labyrinth 2007: No Country for Old Men, but Zodiac or would win almost any other year, and There Will Be Blood and The Assassination of Jesse James could win a number of years, as well 2008: Wall-E 2009: The Hurt Locker 2010: The King's Speech 2011: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol or Drive - I'm sure there must be something better I haven't seen 2012: Moonrise Kingdom or Django Unchained 2013: Rush, I think. Although there are a lot of other really good movies that year. 2014: Grand Budapest Hotel 2015: Mad Max: Fury Road, although Creed is a close second 2016: Captain America: Civil War, but there's a lot I still have not seen 2017 (so far): Baby Driver

1985 - Brazil 1986 - Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 1987 - The Princess Bride 1988 - Die Hard 1989 - Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure 1990 - I've watched The Hunt For Red October more times, but I'll say Goodfellas because dellarigg's good opinion matters that much to me. 1991 - Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 1992 - Unforgiven (over Army of Darkness was the toughest decision) 1993 - Jurassic Park 1994 - Pulp Fiction 1995 - Twelve Monkeys 1996 - Fargo 1997 - The Fifth Element 1998 - Rushmore 1999 - Galaxy Quest 2000 - X-Men 2001 - Wet Hot American Summer 2002 - Adaptation 2003 - X2 2004 - The Incredibles 2005 - Batman Begins 2006 - Casino Royale 2007 - Hot Fuzz 2008 - In Bruges 2009 - Inglourious Basterds 2010 - Inception 2011 - X-Men First Class 2012 - Wreck-It Ralph 2013 - Her Army of Darkness, because Bruce Campbell slept for too long, and this is a weak year. 2014 - Guardians of the Galaxy 2015 - Mad Max: Fury Road 2016 - Arrival 2017 - Blade Runner 2049

Sure, why not! 1973 - Westworld (just barely edging out The Wicker Man) I'd already stopped reading at 1973, when you didn't choose Mean Streets.

Sure, why not! 1973 - Westworld (just barely edging out The Wicker Man) I'd already stopped reading at 1973, when you didn't choose Mean Streets. I'm really, really not into gangster flicks. I do think, to be clear, Goodfellas is a great film, it's obviously well shot, well written and well acted, but... it's not a genre i care about particularly so it's not something that's ever really going to top my favourites, however good it is. Ditto Mean Streets. This is, after all, a "favourites" thread, not "objectively best" thread.
