So I make use of desktop shortcut icons to webpages constantly (dragging from the 'i' icon at the left of the address bar, not using 'save page as') and I recently noticed, after an update, that when I create new ones the title of an article or page or what have you is no longer the title of the webpage shortcut saved. Instead, it's just the url. This makes it impossible to navigate though ones I've saved. I don't have time to rename each one I save.
Anyone else notice this? Know how to fix it?

I don't use firefox much, but it looks like this add-on might give you more options in naming the shortcut: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/deskcut/

I still can't identify the source of the problem.

I'm puzzled as to why you don't use bookmarks within the browser? Those transfer nicely when you update the browser. Less clutter on your desktop.
