Just heard that a local high school is doing an adaptation of "Heathers" and the usual righteous grown-ups are outraged. I haven't seen the movie, but know it has some big fans here. How crazy would a high school drama club doing it be, in your eyes?

The protagonists murder a bunch of their fellow students, and are still (mostly) treated as being in the right (or at least cool and justified), if it follows the movie. So, very much by a lot? |

Yea, I watched Heathers for the first time a few months ago thinking it was basically just "80's Mean Girls", which...kind of. But the response wouldn't surprise me because:
a) You wouldn't even get the movie made post-Columbine, much less expect to stage a local school production that retains most of the plot.
b) The language alone seems like it wouldn't fly in most high schools
I'm curious if it's really the high school trying to mount this (in which case, what arts teacher is trying to get their ass fired?) or some student-led thing that got too far down the track trying push the adults buttons before someone got wind of it.

Update. Talked to the theater director at the high school last night. She said that, although the swear words are gone, the high school musical version really does include all the murders, the Drano, etc., there's a song called "I Love My Dead Gay Son," etc. The whole plot is intact.
She said that the school administration, while not necessarily seeking attention for the show or pushing to promote it, is also happy to take credit when it gets praised. She said when they were informed about various plot points, the administration mostly said things like "You're going to do ...what?" instead of "No." The kids, she says, freaking love the show and would do it for years if they could.

It still sounds kinda crazy. It is amazing to me that a school could stage a show where a couple of high school kids murder a bunch of their classmates. I mean, with the frame that they were justified in killing them.

The musical is great, and thankfully breathes its own life into the story instead of copying the movie word for word. The songs are catchy, too. That being said, I imagine gutting all the polarizing bits (except for, you know, the whole murder thing) would make it a bit flaccid. |

I grew up with the movie (watched it at least a dozen times in high school). My daughter loves the musical.

triggered, libs?  ...But seriously, what's the point of this? Who's this for? Fans of the movie and musical are just gonna avoid this shit like the plague, so I guess that leaves people who agree with the aggressively anti-SJW and affirmative action satire, but are they really going out of their way to watch Heathers? Even if you go with the byline that it's for a right-wing audience, you're still left with a story about two white people that kill the big bad minority bullies. Look, i get Eli Roth's Death Wish. I hate it, but I get it. Who the hell thought this was a good idea? |
