So my dad pulled out his old wine making equipment and offered to lead me and his old winemaking buddy's daughter through the whole process! We made little videos of it (because we weren't going to remember all the steps) and then ended up splicing them all together to put them on facebook. But I thought some here might also be interested, so check it out!
This is all in Napa, the grapes are zinfandel, and the goal is a wine that is light enough that it won't require any aging (that's a bit more complex, and my dad thought we should start out with something easy.) We may or may not also make a bit of port from the wine too - it'll depend on the sugar levels when we check next week!

For the fermentation, are you just using whatever natural yeast is present in the air/on the grapes, or is there a specific type of yeast you add? Good luck and please feel free to wine as much as you want.

(He actually says that most, though not all, wineries do the same when they do natural fermentations.)

One of the cool things about all this is that my dad (now retired) worked in the wine industry for 30 years, and he'd kind of burned out on it, so it's fun to see him rediscovering the passion for it.

So what you're saying is, basically, this is not the correct way to make wine?

🐍 huss 🐍 yes, sorry for the late response, everyone is fine. The fires stayed out of Napa itself for the most part. (Also, it turns out that vineyards are pretty good firebreaks. )
