I get the feeling that Seth MacFarlane is trying to bring Star Trek ideals to people who think Star Trek is too intellectual. To put a finer point on it: I get the feeling that Seth MacFarlane is trying to smack conservatives in the face with liberal values.
Notice that last week's villains were sadistic anti-vaxxers.

This week's villains, the astrologically minded. Not specifically trying to shame conservative thought but definitely feels like a viewpoint he'd hold.

I don't think astrology is contained to any particular place on the political spectrum. I am a little surprised they didn't point out that you don't see the same constellations from other solar systems, though.

It isn’t, no but it falls into Macfarlane’s contempt for what he sees as anti-science. Orville even at its best is just about working with a brainstem, only so much you can do with Voyager writers so missing stuff like that (plus not having a prime directive to muck with their mucking with pre-warp civilisations) is expected.

So, the last few episodes seem to have been very much focused on McFarlane's interests and I think it's somewhat detrimental to the show. Every episode seems to include music you know he picked out, there's the very keen focus on science and for whatever reason soap opera shenanigans keep getting added to the mix.
I know, it's a character-driven show but I feel like the continued romance drama isn't helping because I'm just not connecting to it at all. At least he hasn't gotten his Marty Stu to sing a showtune to us yet.
