I think it counts, it was released at retail, has a weirdly elaborate story mode - each venue gets a pretty decent CGI intro, there is a lot of anime-styled character art, it's got a fairly traditional adventure game interface that they don't use enough - and it's a real game even if it's not particularly long (especially short if you get good at trick shots in 9-ball). Unlike steam trash it's a real game, and a pretty weird one at that. I won't go so far as recommending it - pool game physics have gotten much better in the years since - but it's not in the same league as steam trash. I'm honestly glad I played it.

Granted, that I can't really defend. I decided to play until I ran out of lives and then got into it, even though it was terrible.

Yeah, but you also played an Army Men game. Are most of the Army Men games terrible? I remember renting one for the n64 and having a pretty good time.

6180: The Moon - Excellent little minimalist platformer that is an entire dollar on Steam right now. Possibly too short, I wanted way more content, but what is there is excellent and everyone should play it.

Distraint: I got this for free for some reason and I don't remember why. Anyway it's not bad! Charming little horror game, has a nifty art style. Some parts aren't great - ending tries to be edgy but feels more awkward, one puzzle involving a dog makes no sense - but as a whole pretty good!

If you'd said you downloaded a ROM I wouldn't question, but that you bought a Game Gear game in (presumably) 2018 ... I mean...

The 3DS has Game Gear games on Virtual Console for really cheap. They didn't support it for that long, so there aren't very many - which makes selling Dragon Crystal very weird - but they're there. As for Edith Finch, it's pretty heavy on the walking simulator side of the equation, there are some puzzles but they're quite simple, but I'd argue it's the best example of that form.

G.O.D.: Recently fan translated JRPG, starts out as a riff on Earthbound then goes in a completely different direction. It's kind of amazing, and the story is always entertaining. Not perfect, the battles move too slowly and there is a difficulty spike right at the end that is just irritating but overall, worth it!

Defenders of Oasis: Game Gear JRPG that is fairly simple and easy, but still pretty fun and entertaining. I wound up liking it, though if it was longer I would have been pretty annoyed since it can only do so much with the basic battle system.

Ys II: The steam version. It's really fun, fast and clever, and the bumpy combat is weirdly satisfying. I like it! I generally like this series, though most of them don't have bumpy combat now.

Velocity 2x - A mix of platformer and space shooter, which is mostly pretty good though some late game areas are pretty bullshit which is why it took me a long time to beat - Was near the end for ages but one of the levels just sucked so I was stuck there. It wasn't terrible.

Layers of Fear: Apparently it has multiple endings but getting them is a bit obscure and I don't care. I wasn't too fond of this, since it likes to lock off paths for what feels like arbitrary reasons and I think this genre of game should encourage exploration. Also probably thinks it's more clever than it is, since it has a lot of jump scares but very few scary ones. Still, I enjoyed it well enough.

Ardy Lightfoot: Charming and short SNES platformer, I liked it a fair bit even if the controls are not quite good enough to handle what the level designers thought they could. Still, fun game, especially in the modern era where savestates exist so you can deal with the crap easier.

Donkey Kong (Game Boy): It's weird how most of the game is part of a plot twist, but it's a really good little puzzle platformer and one of the best Game Boy games. World 8 is infuriating, however.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture: Personally the difference between a good "walking simulator" and a bad one is what it does with the interactivity and how it uses that to tell the story. This just seems to use it to make it take longer to tell - at the best parts I wondered if it would work better as a movie that slowly revealed bad things were happening rather than starting after the fact wandering around stumbling onto glowy nonsense. Didn't really have much tension as a result and I didn't like it. Good soundtrack though!

Full Throttle Remastered: It was cheap on PSN, and pretty good! The minivan subplot was extremely 1995 - the minivan market crashed like five years later - but it does recall the current crossover frenzy. Anyway the game is pretty good, if brief, and while there is a little bit of adventure game BS all in all I enjoyed it. Probably a good thing I only spent $5 though
