In 2016 I finished 39 games. In 2017 I finished 40. So I want to continue this trend and finish 41 games in 2018. Can I do it? Maybe! Though my love of JRPGs makes it a challenge. No matter! In order to encourage myself to finish 41 games I am going to keep a regular thingy here, in this topic, where I will mention what I'm playing and where I am at. You can play along too and set your own fun goals.
Currently playing: Persona 5 - Because of course I need to have something absurdly long as my first one. I just got to the second palace, and it's reminding me of what I like about Persona as well as being weirdly pertinent to last year for a game that was in development for so long. Still, very slick and cool, great game so far.
Crysis - Somewhere shooting North Koreans though it's leading to aliens eventually. It does look real good, even if it's a decade old, so good on them for the absurd requirements it had back in the day, but it doesn't seem very special so far. Also starting the game with a trailer for your cool suit is dumb.
7 Blades - Bless you emulation, letting me play a europe-only beatemup that I think is intriguing. It has a magical dragon tank and flying ninja spaceships and is just weird enough I want to push through even though it doesn't play great.

First game finished: Super Adventure Island (SNES)
Fun little platformer, can be finished in a couple hours, but controls really well and has kickass music. It's really pretty worthwhile, I'd recommend it.

I think I only got to the final level a few times, and I honestly don't remember if I ever beat it. Soundtrack is dope.

Not easy as a grown-up either, definitely designed one of those games where they made it hard to keep you playing. Still cool though, and not evil like Adventure Island can be. Also, I beat half of 7 Blades, but it's one of those games where you have two stories so I'm not done yet. Have to play as the girl. It's not a good game, but the story is totally insane so I am enjoying it. Running total: 1.5

I still don't know how Hudson got away with Adventure Island when it is an ugly reskin of Sega's Wonder Boy. -looks it up- Apparently they bought the rights. It just makes me sad because Wonder Boy (and many Master System games) just looked so much better than their NES counterparts.

It just makes me sad because Wonder Boy (and many Master System games) just looked so much better than their NES counterparts. The weird thing is how the Adventure Island and Wonder Boy series immediately wildly diverged in strange and complicated ways. Like how Wonder Boy got medieval and complicated and kinda cool. Anyway, finished 7 Blades completely. The girl is a worse game than the guy, because she has a gun but no real special moves or anything. The story is fun and stupid and weird, but the game isn't great really. I enjoyed it, a lot, but I would never recommend it. Running total: 2

Finished Crysis! It was an okay FPS but hardly amazing. I found the fmv intro hilarious because it was so counter to the games whole look at how cool our graphics are thing, since it was so badly compressed. Otherwise it learned a bit hard on being impossible to run because it didn't really have much else.
Also finished Kirby's DreamLand 2 but didn't get the secret ending so I'm not counting it yet.

I am really off the pace.
But I finished Detention! It's pretty cool. Not as spooky as you would expect for a spooky game but still pretty neat, and the story was interesting. Well done Detention guys.

Aeon Genesis did fan translations of all the main SNES The Great Battle games, so I finished the first one, since it's both fun and very short. The controls could be better and, more importantly, the dudes could move WAY faster, but it was fun!

Liberation Maiden, though the ending is such a weird cliffhanger that I thought I wasn't finished. Kinda not that fun - control scheme is weird and unweildy - and incredibly short, plus they forgot to put the final boss in, right after setting it up. Not something I would recommend, but I did apparently finish it so...

Drakengard: Okay technically I'm not getting ending E because I'm not going to go through and collect all the goddamn hidden weapons because I'm a grown-up and have things to do and the game isn't fun enough to justify the busy work. But I did get up to ending D and that last chapter is certainly something.

Pac Man World: The intro is delightful, so delightful that I went in much more of a fan than I wound up being at the end. I wound up skipping a lot of the mazes because they got really poorly done as the game got harder - increasingly difficult and full of traps - but without being much fun. There's also something a bit iffy with the controls, it's just not quite right. Still, whoever did the FMV was a genius and it has regular Pac Man in it, not bad for a game I got for $1.

Those were after my time, but now I kind of want to play one of their earlier games, Rocky's Boots*. * That video is really annoying, but it's the C64 version that I'm used to.

The Starship Damrey: Neat little 3DS adventure game. Kinda oversells its exploration gameplay - goes on about how it doesn't have tutorials but apart from the opening it doesn't really confuse the player very much. Wound up being pretty neat!

Peggle: As though I needed to respond to Rando's edutainment joke, I played through a the regular mode of this silly puzzle game. Peggle is sort of like Cheetos, it's not that good but you don't stop and then suddenly you've done the whole thing and are looking at the extra content thinking maybe it'd be fun to go on to that. Note: It was free on EA's Origin thing, I didn't buy Peggle.

Dangerous Golf: Silly fun! Some of the challenges are irritating - didn't get all gold after a while because I was pulling my hair out over it - but it's a fun way to smash stuff and blow off steam. Recommended!
Mighty Switch Force: Haven't finished the bonus levels but whatever. Pretty fun little platformer apart from level 15 which is bad and should feel bad.

Strider 2: I remember when this came out a bunch of reviews complained about unlimited continues and I didn't get why that was bad but playing it I understand the problem, though reviews at the time couldn't explain it well: there is no real incentive to get better because there is no impact to failure. Limiting continues is not the solution, but it was really easy and short. Looked cool though.

Army Men: Green Rogue - It's bad, but in a really kind of easy way, and it's short, so I plowed through in one sitting. Waste of time though, and a bad game. It also has an insane opening sequence that does not pay off at all.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter: They sure are proud of the whole "it doesn't hold your hand!" thing, but that mostly just seems to mean that it's kinda aimless and occasionally you can miss important stuff if you're not careful. The big twist is kinda dumb, reminds me of creative writing projects in grade 8 where you're trying to blow the teacher's mind so you throw in a very stupid twist right at the end. I mean, a lot of it is supposed to be written by a kid but I thought it was all kinda dumb. On the upside, it's very pretty.

Backstreet Billiards: It is a weird PS1 pool game about getting a magic pool cue back from the Triads and the physics isn't great but I discovered that doing trick shots in 9 ball makes it go real fast. Also I will succeed so long as I keep playing weird short games.
