This summer, I bought a new iMac. (The old one was so old I couldn't upgrade the software, and then suddenly my keyboard stopped working. I told my brother it was 11 years old, and he literally said "OH MY GOD!") I'm still on a DSL connection with my ISP, so it's still slow, but slightly faster and less buggy.
For the past few weeks, I've been getting messages telling me to upgrade the OS to the latest version. This morning, I finally broke down and did it. And now… my Mac won't start.
Instead, I get a screen of text gibberish error messages, beginning with the word "panic". It restarts automatically about 3 or 4 times after that, similar error messages each time, before finally giving up with a circle with a diagonal line through it: the universal "no" symbol.
Silly me, I haven't been backing up my stuff. Luckily, I still have my old Mac, which is how I'm typing this.
I can get into the Recover Menu by holding down keys while it boots, (which for some reason takes over an hour to boot, as it uses some sort of over-the-internet boot disk) but I'm not sure what to do next. Reinstalling the OS is an option, but wasn't that what caused the problem in the first place? Is there a way I can uninstall and go back to the previous version of the OS?
Does anybody else have any ideas?

I phoned Apple support, and on their advice, I re-installed the OS. Which required a 12-hour download over my landline. Everything seems to be working, for now...
