Season 5 will release on May 29. Official trailer (with considerable flashback): www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXg2_yExgVYHas anyone gotten to watch the Season 4 recut/remixed version yet? And how excited are we for Season 5? Also, shit, I have to remember how to be a gimmick account again.

I've only watched the first episode of the remix and it was good. I can't really remember season 4 all that well because of how it was structured(also watched it all the day it came out in a feverdream like state and didn't ever rewatch it), but it was clearly different. I think once it starts getting into the back half is when it will really diverge because all the present day stuff at once will be happening.
Netflix actually removed the original season 4 from what I can tell so I can't really compare. Might buy season 4 on dvd just to preserve the original.

According to this, the original cut is still available on Netflix--just well hidden: www.polygon.com/2018/5/4/17320060/arrested-development-season-4-remix-netflixI haven't had a chance to watch the new trailer yet, but I'll be watching. This might be a good excuse to just watch the entire original series again, then the remixed S4, and then S5. It should be mentioned that the last week of May will be incredibly busy for Netflix, as the first half of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt S4 will arrive the next day. I also missed that this will be the last season for Kimmy as well. I guess that will allow more time for Ellie Kemper and Jane Krakowski to do Sonic commercials.

In clever but badly belated advanced prep for this, I recently (like March) started getting the girlfriend, who had never seen any of it, to watch the first couple episodes. At the rate we're going, we will get this done by the time we are in a nursing home.

As one of the most strident season 4 defenders (While still admitting it was heavily flawed) it is kind of weird to watch them in this manner because it's so opposed to how I think of the events, but I do think the episodes are improved. Even though it's all the same jokes, some stuff definitely caught me off-guard and caused me to cackle out loud.
A lot of the race stuff (Specifically exaggerated accents) that already felt weird and uncomfortable has aged verrry badly too. And with Cross and Tambor's continued involvement s5 could turn out to be hella problematic. Looking forward to seeing everyone together again though.

Having finally seen the trailer, I'm now pretty optimistic. Having the cast together, in the same room, on a frequent basis is a big improvement over S4 in and of itself.

I'm just worried IMDB doesn't have a way to list alternative season mixes!

I've been watching the remixed episodes, and I think I preferred the original cut. Granted, I was one of the relatively few who liked Season 4 the first time around, but I think the remixes suffer in part because it doesn't feel like episodes anymore as that they remixed them into a massive story and placed titles every 22-or-so minutes. They felt more like stories the first time around.

They still have to keep doubling back and reminding you of stuff constantly. And the narrator has to do even more heavy lifting than before.

I'm enjoying the remix a fair bit, I'm not sure which of the versions I prefer to be honest.

I finished the Remix and it was okay. Ron Howard definitely did a lot of repeating of plot points. I kept thinking I had restarted the wrong episode.
I should confess that I never finished watch the original S4 cut. I tried twice but got distracted by other things each time and only ever got half way through. It was boring and not super funny. Like, the funniest bits were just call backs to the first 3 seasons. I didn't feel like it had a lot of new funny stuff. I mean, no one is running around quoting season 4 on pop culture forums on the internet.

I also think the original season 4's end stretch was some of the best AD has had to offer and I absolutely loved the ending of George Michael punching his dad.

I stopped watching the remix in the middle of the first Lindsay/Tobias episode. The incessant narration was annoying.

Yeah, that interview is...a thing. Can we just get a new show with Jessica Walter and Alia Shawkat?

Were it just Tambor being a jerk it would have been, βYeah, Tamborβs an awful personβ and it wouldnβt have really bothered me. But both the description of the intensity of his jerkiness (Walter saying it stood out over a career that spans the legendary-for-entitled-jerkiness-and-sexual-harassment 1960s and 70s which is really saying something) the gang-up by the other male cast members just disgusted me.

I can not muster up any enthusiasm to even start season 5. The old TV Club appears to have reviews for the first couple of episodes and they are pretty middling, so that's not helping.

Portia de Rossi was underrated and we miss her. Good on her though for doing w-t-f she wants. (In real life she has retired from acting and is barely in season 5.) Instead we get more cameos from the families of Ron Howard and/or Brian Grazer. Rance Howard, Ron's dad, has an incredible IMDB page! He died last fall, but even this role was not his last, not by far. Aside from the LEM space module and Kitty, everything else about the Imagine Entertainment office and people is tiresome! That is my only complaint.

Wasn't very impressed with S5. A weird mix of rushed and belaboured, it felt like the plot structure (especially people's motivations for doing things) was quite underdeveloped, haphazard and inconclusive. While lots of conversations based on familiar character tics (Lucille is callous, Buster is immature, Tobias is... Tobias, etc.), that might still be funny if quick and snappy, instead went on much too long without adding anything new.

I just finished. I kind of liked it, I guess - there were a few solid laughs, abut also some stuff that never really worked. The show has no idea what to do anymore with at least half the cast, though, which is a major problem. I think Season 4 was better, honestly.

Season 5 part duex is done, and the show went out on a good - if murderous - note. This was the best half season of the Netflix era, and it's unlikely for all the reasons that are reasons to continue after this. So, Ron Howard stepped back to minimal narration, the plot was complex and the jokes good, an amazing mother-boy story line arose out of nowhere, the actors appeared to be on the same stage, etc. I didn't notice the audio problems that have been the main complaint. Gob does some fun magic. Lindsay does not seem miserable. Michael once again misbehaves. A 3-D printer is somehow amusing. Perhaps a hug is warranted, even on this show. A very particular concrete mafia relies on tap dancing.
The Newport Beach surf gang is a real thing! I've read about in the newspaper, anyway.

Damn, you know what? I never watched ANY of Season 5. I forgot it was even coming out. I also didn't watch the S4 remix.
I didn't much like the early episodes of the original S4, but I thought the ones near the end were much better. Maybe I should give all of this a try.

Watched the first two of Season 5B- it seemed better than 5A so far, but it's still gone from something I'd binge and rewatch to something that's simply fine. Mostly posting to share my observation that Maeby/Annette is working on a jigsaw puzzle called "ungrateful grandchild" in the second episode.

...and that's it. This felt better than the first half of the season, though I probably won't rewatch these as much as S1-S3. I was at least interested enough to watch two episodes in a sitting, as opposed to S4 which mostly felt like a chore. That, coupled with the courtroom storyline, reminded me of watching the end of S3 when they dumped the last four (with the whole mock trial arc) one random evening on FOX. Glad that Lindsay reappeared, if only for a cameo. I had thought they'd resolve the Lucille 2 storyline by revealing her to have been alive, instead of making one of the Bluths a murderer, but Buster's probably the best choice if they had to go that route. Then there's the whole "Buster killed his grandmother" revelation- I was distracted at first, thinking of when Lucille's mother Nana died offscreen, six months before "Missing Kitty", but I'm assuming Mimi was Lucille's stepmother. It might be interesting to go back and rewatch the first few seasons of Buster's "I'M A MONSTER!" bits knowing he's repressing memories of pushing Mimi down the stairs, but mostly I think I'll ignore it.
