patbat For whatever reason the Smurfs games all had really good scores by Alberto Jose "McAlby" Gonzalez, one of the most distinctive composers of the chiptune era. (He also did the music for the Asterix games so I guess he just got typecast?) His trick is he does the arpeggio thing typical of European composers of the era (see also the Follin bros, Jeroen Tel, etc) but uses them in sharp stabs on the offbeats which gives his songs a reggae or ragtime vibe depending on the tempo. Underrated guy.

Somewhere on TOC in the past week or so, they did a recap on Wizards and Warriors, whose music was composed by David Wise, later famous for his work on the Donkey Kong Country games. The "low health" song is pretty attention getting but, IMO, not as stressful as the one in Sonic The Hedgehog, not least in part because there really wasn't much consequence to a death -- if you had extra lives, you'd respawn at the exact spot you died, and if you didn't, unlimited continues would return you to the start of the level with everything you'd already collected. W&W also had one of the most comically terrible items in videogame history, the Cloak Of Darkness, which would render the character invisible to the player but not the enemies, who would freely attack while the character blended seamlessly into the background.

Game Boy Pedantic note that the SNES uses replayed samples for its audio. Anyway IMO the Genesis's soundchip has aged really poorly, and it's really bad at doing ambient stuff. Have you listened to Ecco the Dolphin's OST recently? The compositions are all very good but you can hear the game straining to use the macho Yamaha tones with some level of subtlety. E.g., here's an about-as-good-as-it-could-be remix of "Aquatic Ambience" using the Genesis soundchip - imo the instrumental samples sound awkward and shrill in a way that's not bad per se but at the same time it loses the Chill Vibes of David Wise's original.

Please everyone, tell me your opinions of this video game soundtrack. I had the Vic 20 version of this (and was pretty good at the arcade game it was based on, Rally X). The Vic 20 had a terrible square wave generator, nothing near as fancy as the SID, so the frequencies were off - the final note of the loop was weirdly flat and we used to make fun of it. But by god, listening to that for hours while playing really got on your nerves.

Ok, CANONICAL RATING of all the Rainbow Road themes
Mario Kart 64 Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Mario Kart 8 Mario Kart DS Super Mario Kart Mario Kart 7 Mario Kart Wii Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Special mention to the Mario Kart: Super Circuit rendition of the SNES Rainbow Road theme for being one of the actual worst video game tracks I've ever heard:
