Somewhere on TOC in the past week or so, they did a recap on Wizards and Warriors, whose music was composed by David Wise, later famous for his work on the Donkey Kong Country games. The "low health" song is pretty attention getting but, IMO, not as stressful as the one in Sonic The Hedgehog, not least in part because there really wasn't much consequence to a death -- if you had extra lives, you'd respawn at the exact spot you died, and if you didn't, unlimited continues would return you to the start of the level with everything you'd already collected.
W&W also had one of the most comically terrible items in videogame history, the Cloak Of Darkness, which would render the character invisible to the player but not the enemies, who would freely attack while the character blended seamlessly into the background.

Pedantic note that the SNES uses replayed samples for its audio.

Anyway IMO the Genesis's soundchip has aged really poorly, and it's really bad at doing ambient stuff. Have you listened to Ecco the Dolphin's OST recently? The compositions are all very good but you can hear the game straining to use the macho Yamaha tones with some level of subtlety. E.g., here's an about-as-good-as-it-could-be remix of "Aquatic Ambience" using the Genesis soundchip - imo the instrumental samples sound awkward and shrill in a way that's not bad per se but at the same time it loses the Chill Vibes of David Wise's original.
