Not a side dish, but the stuff that is served free automatically before every meal.
Obviously the correct answer is chips & salsa, but that's why you get multiple votes, to see what wins second place.

Any kind of warm bread with butter. That's all I want! (I mean, after chips and salsa.)

I'm impressed with the showing for olives here, which is what inspired this poll. The chintzy places in Spain give you fine olives, but the nice places give you pitted olives stuffed with anchovy.

That's how I feel about chips and salsa though. I've been places where they all but open the tostitos bag and pour it on your head and then huck a jar of unopened salsa at you, and I will still mow through two rounds of that shit before I've made my meal decision.

Both are ill-advised! And very cheap to give away by the bucket. Olives are your man - a few small bites of briny, oily olives. I also voted for edamame: they're salty and yummy, plus they keep your hands busy and aren't too filling.

Definitely. I've only been to a few places that give out free olives (or at least good ones) and they rapidly became a favorite place to go. I've never been anyplace that gave out free edamame or papadum though. But my vote was with bread; when it's done right, it's just perfect. This place in Dallas we used to go to would send out these mini baguettes, and a crock of European butter with crunchy sea salt packed atop it and that's one of my happiest places.

I don’t like olives so they’d be lost on me. I’ve had papadum at Indian restaurants and edamame included with sushi meals. Both good.

That's why I selected olives. In Zaragoza, they gave us anchovy stuffed olives. It was my first time ever having them, and I've been in love with them since. There's an italian place here that used to give 3 different olive oils along with bread, so you could compare which one you liked more. But the last time I went, they just had bread and butter. Oh, my favorite korean place gives you 4 sample plates before you even order; kimchi, pickled cucumber & daikon radish, fermented black beans, and a cold, marinated tofu skin. I love that place for so many reasons, and those quick snacks are just 4 of them.

I thought about including that in the poll, but I've only ever had it served after the order, so there you go.

Yeah, my favorite restaurant has a flax and currant bread, served with ridiculously creamy local butter topped with little crumbles of smoked salt. Olives are great and all, but they're not this bread.

Am I getting some mango chutney or raita to go with my poppadoms or do I have to eat 'em dry?

Chutney is assumed.
Also I am just disappointed in whoever voted for the Quincy's yeast roll. No one else goes for peanuts but me? Good at 5 Guys, good at Logan's Roadhouse where you just throw the shells on the floor (classy).

look, done right a warm yeast roll is a quality butter delivery system. I would say it's a fair safer bet in that regard than some of the other options (baguette, stick, mystery basket), at least in terms of consistency.
In shell peanuts (I assume you are thinking of some sort of Texas Roadhouse scenario) are one of the worst work-to-reward ratios in food. Pass Olives...I just don't like olives. Pass
So I went with a bread as my distant third after chips/salsa and edamame

I don't really care for butter as a spread (look, there's a lot wrong with me, OK), so I like bread that has its own seasoning, like onion rolls or the fabulous cinnamon bread at Mastoris, a diner in the middle of nowhere between Trenton and Philly that is the only reason to go to that part of NJ. There was a diner in NYC that would bring you various pickles ( Harold's Deli (also in NJ) has an entire pickle bar, but most people are there for the $30 sandwiches that feed a crowd). I'm also fond of the wide flat crispy noodles (the light, blistery ones, not the sad thin cracker-like ones) that you get at good Chinese places and eat with duck sauce. Also, I don't think I've ever been to an Indian restaurant that served papadam as a free table appetizer, and I feel like I'm missing out now.

SERIOUSLY? That's no kind of reward! It's literally peanuts!

You're supposed to eat them with your main meal so you did well to not include them. Koreans won't touch any of that stuff until rice and soup hit the table as well.

These are all great, but my hands down favorite is a place back home that just does foccacia right and keeps it coming. I could eat loaves of the stuff.
