First trailer is up:
I'm optimistic, though there's not a whole lot to go on here. I'll just have to learn to adjust to not getting Stephen Fry as Aziraphale.

I am somewhat excited, if extremely nervous. Good Omens is one of my favorite books of all time, and while American Gods the TV show was good, and I'm trying not to be one of the " they changed it, now it sucks" kind of nerd, AG was... odd. Maybe I'm worried that the trailer just focuses on Aziraphale and Crowley and doesn't show Adam or Them at all?

I was finding the use of "You're my best friend" a little on-the-nose, but then recalled the book thing it was probably referencing and was happy.

We finished it last night. I quite enjoyed it, and thought it was well-done, even if there are a few deleted bits (especially the other four Horsemen) I would have liked to have seen onscreen. I think all the casting worked, the added scenes and characters served the story, for the most part, and Neil did Terry proud.
I may have a slightly better sense of how I feel about it on rewatch. Like with Hitchhiker's Guide, I know the source material well enough that I noticed lines missing, which makes it hard to give it a completely fair shake on first viewing. Unlike Hitchhiker's Guide, I was mostly happy about the adaptation.

I have a great deal of fondness for the '80s BBC TV adaptation of Hitchhiker's Guide, but yeah, Good Omens topped it for sure. ...and now I want a modern Hitchhiker's Guide with Michael Sheen as Arthur Dent and David Tennant as Ford Prefect, FUCK

I liked it! I thought Tennant and Sheen were great and the kids were passable to good.
I kinda wanted to see the Horsepeople ham it up a bit more? Chew some scenery? And honestly nothing against Brian Cox but Death should have been more ALL CAPS.
Those are minor quibbles. Overall it was a good solid adaptation that made me laugh and want to reread the book.

I didn't read the book, but I really liked it without being familiar with the source material. Sheen and Tennant have amazing chemistry and need to be in more stuff together, but I thought all the performances were at the very least good with the award for the worst performance going to Anathema. The cinematography was great and made me want to visit England more than probably any recent British production I can think of. A good production all around that I can definitely see revisiting in a year.

I support Frances McDormand as the Voice of God, but I am not in agreement with so much voiceover. If it had actually added any nuance, or had been used in a Lemony Snickett fashion, that would be one thing, but it ended up just spelling out bits that didn't need any clarification. I rather suspect voiceover even existed because Gaiman wrote the script, and he wanted to keep some bits of prose he thought particularly clever.*
Overall though it hit all the points I thought it should. Honestly I've never been the biggest fan of the book itself, more a fan of the idea of the all the plot elements. Michael Sheen and David Tennant were of course excellent, and I'm a fan of Jon Hamm continuing to be used in comedic roles. And Michael McKean was a nice surprise!
Also I could watch David Tenannt yell at plants all day.
*I have been having my own personal Gaiman backlash for a number of years now, right about the time he started getting more mainstream attention. Not in a "I knew about Gaiman ages before you johnny-come-latelies!" way, more in a "that's also when he hit his midlife crisis and also he married Amanda Palmer" way.

I know what you mean about Amanda Palmer though.

I never read the book, so as a series alone, I give it an A-/B+. I agree that the voiceover was too much in some places and the final episode resolution was a bit underwhelming*. Sheen and Tennant are fantastic, though, along with many strong supporting performances from the likes of Michael McKean, Miranda Richardson, and Josie Lawrence. I need gifs of Sheen and Tennant's silly dances.
*[spoiler-related question]: how was Crowley able to withstand getting taken to heaven when the consecrated ground of a church made him jump around in discomfort?

My take Aziraphale notes to Crowley that their plan wouldn't have worked unless Crowley was at least little bit good and Aziraphale was a little bit bad. Its a handwave since the scene implies they are talking about their respective performances as eachother, but it could equally apply to their being able to function in the other's normal plane of existence.

Good Omens is one of my favorite books of all time, so to see it executed faithfully* and extremely well on my television screen was just incredible. I share the sentiments voiced above, and only add that I wish we had gotten to meet the bikers from the book, if only because they were so deeply and so hilariously stupid.
*I am not a stickler when it comes to books adapted for TV/movies, but I mean that this was faithful to the spirit of the book, which is all I ever really want.

I liked it! Solidly done, charming, good-looking. Michael McKean made me smile in every one of his scenes, and Jon Hamm made me swoon - those violet eyes! See, Game of Thrones? It's not THAT difficult to do.
Incidentally, my grandmother's maiden name was Crowley, which means that I'm at least 1/4 evil, possibly more.
