TMZ is reporting that Alex Trebek has died at 80. Haven't seen a real source cover it yet. WHAT IS: my deep sadness?
EDIT: maybe he was just waiting for Sean Connery to go first?

Ugh, so sad about Alex Trebek. He was the best.
Been seeing a lot of people pass around this clip over the last couple days, and it is definitely one of my recent favorites:

French-Canadian Wrestleman, Pat Patterson at 79 due to cancer. The first openly gay professional wrestler, Patterson also is credited with creating the Royal Rumble which is perhaps humanity's single greatest achievement.

Barbara Windsor, at 83, of Alzheimer's. Star mostly of largely interminable Carry On movies where she could regularly be relied upon to be appealingly charming through even the hackiest of material and, latterly, EastEnders. But really, she's just Barbara Windsor and everyone loved her. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55269649

Tiny Lister, whom I knew best as the president in The Fifth Element; 62, possibly of COVID. Also I really thought he had died like ten years ago?

Korean director Kim Ki-Duk of coronavirus. Dude was a total scumbag who killed animals on film, sexually assaulted actresses and then fled to Europe after being shunned in South Korea for being a scumfuck. I guess he made some okay films if you’re a person who likes films and pays attention to European film festivals and shit and is also able to separate the art (which is hella misogynistic and often depicts animal abuse) from the artist.

I saw one of his films (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring) and I nearly walked out due to that (and the version I was saw was the edited one since I don’t think the full one was even allowed in the NL due to animal cruelty statutes). It (pretty sure unfairly) put me off of Korean movies and didn’t even seek out another one until Parasite.
However, it was also the first movie I saw with Dutch subtitles and I got everything, which is was neat.
Yeah that one's the worst with regards to the animal cruelty stuff and I could easily see that movie putting one off the entirety of Korean film if it was the first thing one encountered.

One of my favorite writers.
I had no idea he was still alive!
He published new novels in both 2017 and 2019. Haven't read 2019's yet.
Edited to add: In Twitter's Trending Topics, the death of John le Carre is categorized under the "Politics" heading.

A lot of the stuff I've seen has been quotes from a recent interview in which he sets about Brexit and Boris Johnson. He wasn't a fan.
I've never been sure what to make of him. I read The Spy Who Came In From The Cold and liked it, then I read A Perfect Spy and liked it a lot less, and I've tried about three times to get into The Little Drummer Girl with no success. Maybe I'll give it another go. Plot heavy stuff isn't really my thing.

I don't know if I've ever even read anything by him - espionage isn't my thing.

After all that, I've started The Little Drummer Girl again. Aye, it's pretty good. I started The Night Manager over the summer. I really need to some focus time to finish it. At the same time I bought, I also bought The Constant Gardner, so I plan to read that eventually, as well. I read A Most Wanted Man last spring because I thought I should read it before watching the movie, but now that I've read it, I'm not sure I can bring myself to watch the movie.

There are a lot of le Carre novels and some of them are WAY easier to get into than others. They're definitely not "spy thrillers" in the traditional beach-reading mode, though, they demand a fair bit of up-front attention and willingness to not know what's going on for a while, which I think takes people by surprise.

I didn't know what an asshole he was, which makes me feel a lot better about not liking any of his movies. Even the critically acclaimed ones were pretty skeevy and unenjoyable.
