Economist and activist David Graeber dead at 59. He was known for helping coin the term "We are the 99%," helping to launch Occupy Wall Street, and his works such as "Bullshit Jobs: A theory" which I highly recommend to anybody with a job. Aw man, I read Bullshit Jobs this year for my Louder Than Bombs reading challenge. I was really impressed and I added more of his stuff to my reading list. I have a bad habit of only becoming aware of people when the obits start rolling in. Honestly never heard of him before this week, but I'll have to do some digging now.

I am not much of a sports fan, but as a grade school kid in the 60's growing up where St Louis was the only big city within 100 miles, Lou Brock was probably the closest thing to a sports hero I ever had. They even let us listen to the Cardinals world series games in class on our little transistor radios back in 64 and 67. Otherwise, they had to shoot a president before we got to have a radio on in class.
My little town was full of Cardinals fans, except for a few misguided Cubs fans, but they were pitied almost as much as they were made fun of.
Brock was always a popular player, as well as being such a great athlete. I remember the little league kids wearing t shirts saying "Brock's Base Bandits". From everything I've heard, he was also a kind, decent human being. It's weird, I almost never think about sports, but for some reason I was sort of daydreaming about listening to those world series' games in grade school just yesterday.
R.I.P Lou Brock

RIP Toots Hibbert. 45 years later and times are still so tough.
Sigh. Guess I know what I'll be listening to all day.

Erick Morillo, the guy behind that Jock Jams classic, "I Like to Move It," dead at 49. He was also scheduled to have a court hearing on sexual battery charges later this week so I don't really feel all that bad about it but goddamn if that song wasn't everywhere in my youth. pitchfork.com/news/erick-morillo-i-like-to-move-it-dj-dead-at-49/ I Like To Move It was on heavy rotation at my bar, given the time period, and frequently, when it was on, I'd think to my self that I'd prefer to only move it once.

For some reason I can no longer recall my younger sister and I used to replace the first "move it" with the word "Mojave" (pronounced Moe Jay've) and bellow the chorus of it at each other much to the chagrin of my parents and our other siblings.

And every woman in America texted their friends “fuuuuuuucck” I was at a small outdoor gathering on Friday night. If you ever want to see six adults scream, "Oh FUCK" simultaneously, be the one who breaks this particular news to them.
Alcohol was involved in this gathering, so later we sang "American Pie" and poured out libations in honor of the Notorious RBG as we sat around the fire pit.

Professional wrestleman and face paint aficionado, Road Warrior Animal dead at 60. He was one half of the Road Warriors/Legion of Doom and held tag team gold all over the goddamn place in the 80s and 90s.

Ubiquitous character actress Conchata Ferrell, at 77. I think the first thing I ever saw her in was the Elliot Gould E/R sitcom of the early 80s.

The passing of Ed Benguiat reminded me that Herman Zapf and Adrian Frutiger died not that long ago. I tend to think of font designers as historical figures, not modern, living artists.
I was never a fan of Benguiat's fonts - most of his stuff is the epitome of 60s and 70s design and looked as outdated as bellbottoms when I was working in the 80s. Also fucking Souvenir was like a fucking plague - I hated it as a display face but clients were all over it.

Crash Test Dumbass , I saw Randi speak at UF in 1990. He dazzled with his prestidigitation and thorough, eloquent, and empiric debunking of paranormal phenomena. I followed his output thereafter. I read The Skeptical Inquirer often between 1998 and 2008. I read Flim-Flam! I have a copy of Conjuring, somewhere - it keeps disappearing. I was later surprised to learn that Mark Kramer, who goes by Kramer and is the fellow who founded Shimmy-Disc record label, came to run day-to-day operations of the James Randi Educational Foundation for some period between 2004 and 2006. But, I've fallen away from Randi's hard-line, hyper-rational skepticism in the last 10 years, and I've come to see reason in the arguments posed against its unwavering valuation of 'truth'. And, now that skepticism has been turned on its head by rites of disinformation and atomisation of available information some new critical thinking tools are required. Relatedly, woo is more inviting in its engaged sense of wonder through hermeticism, but harder to digest when a reflexive call of " Bullshit!" (see Penn and Teller) has been the easy answer for most of my adult life.

He is and was one of my favorite songwriter-performers. I once owned most of his 70's albums, and many area bands of my college and shortly beyond years covered his songs. I have so many great, if sometimes fuzzy, memories of those days. His music was a part of the good times of that part of my life. His live double album "A Man Must Carry On" is one of my desert island favorites.
