John Saxon the white dude in Enter the Dragon and the cop from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise is dead at 83. If you watched a lot of shlock in the 70s, 80s and beyond you probably saw about 9000 other movies this dude was in. This bums me out.

Denise Johnson from Primal Scream, her voice especially enlivening Screamadelica and Give Out But Don't Give Up.

Denise Johnson from Primal Scream, her voice especially enlivening Screamadelica and Give Out But Don't Give Up. I see The Guardian did her proud. Here's the final paragraph of the obit. For those not aware of her, I'll quickly point out that she was black. This will become germane as you read on: • This article was amended on 27 July 2020 to replace the main image. A captioning error in photos supplied by an agency led us to publish a picture that was not of Johnson as claimed. It was further amended to correct the incorrect assertion that Johnson sang on Higher Than the Sun, to remove a video showing that song, and to correct Johnson’s age and date of birth.Maybe if they'd gotten rid of some of their shitty centrist columnists instead of the backroom lads and lasses recently, there'd be less of this shit.

Recently watched Battle Beyond the Stars (where Saxon plays the villain) for the first time and, for a John Sayles-scripted Corman epic, I was surprised at how flavorless and boring I found it. For cash-ins in the wake of Star Wars, give me Starcrash any day. But yeah, one of those guys that, for schlock-fiends, we were always delighted to see.

I mean, he died of it, not like "COVID-19" was his band or something.

I mean... karma’s a bitch. It’s sad for his family but, dude, he went to a trump rally without a mask on in a pandemic.

Reni Santoni, at 81. This year has not been kind to the cast of Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.

Pro-wrestle man, Kamala the Ugandan Giant. There were a couple different Kamalas and Kimalas about but this was the one that wrestled in the WWF in the 80s.

I'm a month late to this, which makes it doubly crushing that I didn't find out about this the day it happened, but a belated R.I.P. to Tim Smith from Cardiacs. Uber-talented guy with an uber tragic life. Would be reductive to call him a "musical madman" but I would definitely put him in the same stratum as the likes of Beefheart and Zappa.

Frankie Banali, the drummer and only constant member of Quiet Riot, dead at sixty-eight. Another victim of bad metal healthcare.

Alt-Country (I guess--subgenre labels aren't really my specialty) singer/songwriter Justin Townes Earle (son of Steve Earle) died yesterday at age thirty-eight. I liked that guy.

Punk rock guitarist Walter Lure, dead at seventy-one from cancer. His story was kind of interesting--he somehow managed to hold a decent dayjob as a broker on the stock exchange while playing with Johnny Thunders' various bands and surviving a pretty nasty heroin habit.

In a real shock, Chadwick Boseman, 43, of colon cancer. He’d battled it for 4 years.

Minor correction, he was 42. I am genuinely shook over this.
imdb must have had it wrong because everywhere says he was born in 76 now. Regardless, far too young.

Erick Morillo, the guy behind that Jock Jams classic, "I Like to Move It," dead at 49. He was also scheduled to have a court hearing on sexual battery charges later this week so I don't really feel all that bad about it but goddamn if that song wasn't everywhere in my youth. pitchfork.com/news/erick-morillo-i-like-to-move-it-dj-dead-at-49/

Economist and activist David Graeber dead at 59. He was known for helping coin the term "We are the 99%," helping to launch Occupy Wall Street, and his works such as "Bullshit Jobs: A theory" which I highly recommend to anybody with a job.

Aw man, I read Bullshit Jobs this year for my Louder Than Bombs reading challenge. I was really impressed and I added more of his stuff to my reading list.
