Rudolfo Anaya, author of Bless Me Ultima among other things and essentially the literary mascot of Chicano culture in the Southwest U.S., where I live. Never met him but he was apparently the nicest, warmest fellow.

Some guy who played video games, apparently as his job, died, and his death was given more coverage than Hugh Downs'.

Rest in peace, Earl Cameron -- aged 102. Prole Hole , you know exactly who this legend was.

Farewell Ennio Morricone, author of the best western soundtrack ever made. I have to admit I was surprised you were still alive. 91 years is a damn good run, still sad.
Play that one as loud as your speakers allow.

Charlie Daniels has died at 83 from a hemorrhagic stroke. But I'm still mourning more for Ennio Morricone.

Charlie Daniels has died at 83 from a hemorrhagic stroke. I've said this before, but if you listen to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," you cannot tell me objectively that the Devil's playing wasn't better than Johnny's.

Charlie Daniels has died at 83 from a hemorrhagic stroke. But I'm still mourning more for Ennio Morricone. Well, fuck. Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker band, Johnny Cash, Commander Cody, and other "outlaw country" artists of the late 70's were the soundtrack to a big part of my life in those days. I still love that music, and I miss those days a lot. I got to see Charlie Daniels live maybe half a dozen times, at a local college, a high school gym, and at a few satellite TV dealer's conventions. Last time was at least 30 years ago. Honestly, I haven't listened to any of his newer stuff, or kept up on his opinions since then. I was really shocked and saddened reading the comments about him on his obit over at TOC, the man, the statements he made, and those attitudes they were describing wasn't the Charlie Daniels I knew of. I did a little research about his pronouncements these last several years, and didn't like much of what I learned.
I don't know what happened to him, maybe her had a stroke and his personality changed, maybe he just got old, got a big stick up his butt, and went nuts (and man, let me tell you, that can happen, I've seen it happen more and more often these last few years ). I have some former friends like that. Just because I had to cut them out of my life, doesn't mean I don't treasure the memories of those good times before they went toxic.
I will mourn the music I loved, and the artist that existed back then.
R.I.P Long Haired Country Boy
Ennio Morricone however, to the best of my knowledge, was just awesome right up to the end. "The Ecstasy of Gold" is still one of my absolute favorite pieces of soundtrack music ever.

Thankfully, the only thing I know about Charlie Daniels' politics in the last few years of his life was that he got in a feud with Taco Bell over their usage of Illuminati symbolism in their advertising.

This one really got to me. I wasn't even a huge Glee fan, but we're about the same age and I still remember her early work in music videos and sitcoms like the Bernie Mac show. Add in that she went missing while rafting with her kid and that's just an additional layer of tragedy.

I have to admit, I didn't really know who Naya Rivera was, it's incredibly sad and I feel so bad for her little boy. But Grant Imahara, man, that SUCKS ... we watched Mythbusters pretty regularly back in the day. He was only 49 and reminded me a lot of one of my cousins. Terrible.

But man, what a loss.

Add in that she went missing while rafting with her kid and that's just an additional layer of tragedy. I watched Glee for the first three seasons and then bailed, but her character was my absolute favorite. There's this scene when she confesses her love to her best friend while they stand in front of a row of lockers and her friend rejects her, and Naya sells the everloving fuck out of her reaction. I was a full-grown adult by the time this episode aired, and it wrecked me -- it dredged up a lot of my own traumatic memories around being an angry, defensive, miserable closeted lesbian who was rejected every time I tried to talk to someone about it in confidence, but I don't see that as a bad thing because to me, it meant that Naya Rivera had really given her performance a lot of thought and care. It wasn't over-the-top; it was quietly furious and frustrated and hurt, the way so many of my own whispered-in-the-hallway conversations were. Later on, I saw her talking in an interview about how she and the actress who played her best friend/eventual girlfriend wanted the characters to get together because the fans did, and they were intent on not making it jokey because it wasn't a joke to a lot of people, and I loved her for that.
I didn't follow her that closely but I always found her charming and funny and thoughtful, and I'm sorry she's gone.

Or, as mentioned above, Geoff came back for revenge.

RIP, Joanna Cole, author of 'The Magic School Bus' series of books. We read many of the books to our kids when they were young. Poor Phoebe. She never had to deal with the death of her creator at her old school.

There are words I'm trying to get out about how "oh racism is totally over" but the people who fought and marched are still alive (the ones we didn't kill ourselves, anyway) and it's really only recently that these rights started to be won and people have no sense of history.

It hurts that he fought so hard, for so long, saw the first Black president and now it feels like we’re almost back in the 60s. and you’re right. I mean, Ruby Bridges is younger than my mom!

RIP Mr. Chi Pig from SNFU. I was never a huge fan, they were a bit after my time, but they were as close as you could get to royalty in the Canadian hardcore scene. Hell yes, such an unmistakable voice in an otherwise pretty generic scene, and an absolute madman on stage. Only managed to see them live once (IIRC Chi performed the entire set with a Boglins puppet on his hand) and he was in constant motion the entire night. Just a wild, sweaty, lunatic mess. Amazing band and a one-of-a-kind frontman. Rest In Peace, Mr. Pig
