I see now that this video is redundant, but oh well. This is the song that introduced me to the English Beat. The college station in Champaign played a lot of new-wave-ish stuff while I was working in the electronics factory there. That expanded my musical horizons at least another 5 years past "classic rock".

It's nice having a younger cohort around to introduce you to new music, or at least music you wouldn't otherwise listen to. There's a lot of great music I probably wouldn't have heard if it wasn't for my kids.

Aw man, now we've lost Larry Cohen too. Writer/director of The Stuff and God Told Me To. The latter of which I've been meaning to rewatch...

Both members and their tour members dead in a car crash. Never heard of them but got bummed enough to look them up. Good stuff.

'Bye, Vonda McIntyre. It's kinda amazing how many Star Wars ( 1) and Star Trek books ( all of them?) of yours I read, and how few of your other books I got around to. ETA Actually, I seem to have read a bunch of her short stories, too. Just not many of her novels.

Aww Vonda McIntryre died? This thread has done its work, because I didn't know and that makes me very sad. I've read probably all of her Star Trek books it's probably not healthy. It's not like losing Ursula leGuin, but it's still a sad thing indeed. Prominent female authors in genre fiction just aren't that common even now and I was always happy to see her name on a book cover.

G oodbye, Gene Wolfe -Aside from inventing / developing Pringles,* Wolfe was the author of the Book / Urth of the New Sun and follow-on series. His writing was dense and rich, using antiquated terms in ways that were still easy to grok. The New Sun books were (at first not obviously) set on a dying Earth, and featured an (at first not obviously) unreliable narrator. The other novels in the setting are almost as accessible as the New Sun volumes were dense, and still quite good, but they all deal with the fallibility of individual and institutional 'memories' in some way, among other topics. I really ought to re-read them at some point. There have been a few versions of these covers and combined editions, but after struggling with the & for years as a kid, I immediately adopted this version. This has nothing to do with Wolfe's writing, but I still appreciate it. * "LP: Along those lines, is it true you invented the machine that makes Pringles potato chips?
GW: I developed it. I did not invent it. That was done by a German gentlemen whose name I've forgotten for years. I developed the machine that cooks them. He had invented the basic idea, how to make the potato dough, pressing it between two forms, more or less as in a wrap-around, immersing them in hot cooking oil, and so forth and so on. And we were then called in, I was in the engineering development division, and asked to develop mass production equipment to make these chips. And we divided the task into the dough making/dough rolling portion, which was done by Len Hooper, and the cooking portion, which was done by me, and then the pickoff and salting portion, which was done by someone else, and then the can filling/can sealing portion which was done by a man who was almost driven insane by the program."

Georgette off of Mary Tyler Moore Show news.avclub.com/r-i-p-the-mary-tyler-moore-shows-georgia-engel-1834087248MTM is probably my favourite U.S. sitcom of all time (the only two that come close are Frasier/Cheers and 30 Rock, the latter of which is basically just MTM for the 00's). We lost the mighty Ms Moore what feels like so recently and it's sad to have another leave us. She was the rare actor that could take the "dumb bimbo" role and make it both sympathetic and understandable without ever just being patronising or reductionist, and so much of that is down to Georgia Engel's performance. Enjoy your rest, you earned it.

I should revisit those as well- as you say, they're quite dense, and I think there was a lot that I likely missed on the first time through. The New Sun / Long Sun / Short Sun series remind me of Clarke's old line about "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." While I would classify them as science fiction, it seems close to fantasy just because the technology is so advanced, and yet so old to the characters.

Say what you will about John Singleton’s later films, but if you can pop out a film like this that’s a life well lived in my book:

Peter Mayhew, best known as Chewbacca, has died. He seemed like a super sweet giant of a man who loved his fans. My husband met him once at a con and said his hands were enormous. Rest In Peace, and may the force be with you.

I know most of you probably have no idea who Rachel Held Evans is, but she was a progressive Christian writer and speaker who advocated for full lgbt acceptance in the church and spoke against toxic fundie culture. She died this morning at age 37, leaving behind a husband and two small children.

Madcap comedian Freddie Starr. Not a performer to my taste - in a world of alternative comedy, he was too old-school, too ITV mainstream. Having said that, in the way he would reliably 'go too far' on chat shows (and no doubt real life), he always reminded me of my uncles: their sense of humour similarly resulted in upset and tears more often than not.
