Dried coconut shreds are awful. You'll be pulling out pieces of coconut for the rest of the day. Actual coconut is delicious, and now I want some.

I like the flavor of coconut fine but the texture disgusts me.

If there's coconut involved, I will eat it. Honestly, you could stew shoe leather in coconut milk and I'd gladly chow down.

Coconut* is AWFUL. That cloying flavor that permeates everything it touches! That vile texture that you can recall vividly even years after the last time you ate coconut! The way that some people think it's great and include it in otherwise normal-looking cookies and you eat one of those cookies because there's no warning that they're filled with coconut and then you cant shake the coconut FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. Coconut is a life-ruiner. It's a toss-up for me which I hate more: coconut or banana. On the one hand, I think I dislike the flavor of banana more than the flavor of coconut. But on the other hand, coconut gets inserted into far too many settings where it otherwise shouldn't be than banana does, so it's far harder to avoid. UGH. *I am discounting coconut milk, which is not awful.

Coconut is good in some things and terrible in others, and in "others" I usually mean jellybeans. I actually kind of like the weird cheap chocolate chip cookies with coconut in*, but I am also of Caribbean ancestry and was raised in the kind of place that would sell said cookies, so YMMV. * I can hear Liz n Dick retching from here

So just how awful is coconut? Aww, sweetie! Why do you have so many garbage opinions? We are still cool, though, but geez Louise with your music and now coconut opinions.

I hate to sound pretentious, but I have noted a difference in coconuts depending on where you get them. I loved all the coconuts I had in Thailand, but I found coconuts in both the Philippines and Hawaii to be really cloying and gross. Not particularly tasty. Haven't had any Caribbean coconuts yet.

I've only fairly recently come around on coconut milk, owing to delicious Thai curries. But otherwise I can't stand it. I don't even like suntan lotion that smells like it.

The donut with the coconut flakes on it is the only donut in the box that interests me.

I might well disagree with this entire thread so far, both pro and anti.
I generally enjoy coconut in dried/semi-dried form. I have no problem at all with their texture.
Samoas used to be the best Girl Scout cookies before they switched up to the fake caramel that's reminiscent of the kinda booze that's generally the preserve of alcoholics that don't actually like alcohol (such as all those 99s, that are almost exclusively sold as shot bottles).
I love Manischewitz macaroons.
I once had sun dried coconut shreds that a co-worker brought from Senegal, and enjoyed them.
Almond Joys are OK as cheap Hershey candy bars go.
I remember liking coconut rum back in college, though I don't think I've had it in 17-19 years and suspect I'd now find it way too cloying and sweet.
That said, I despise coconut butter and coconut/MTC Oil. These two things are popping up in more and more products and they ruin everything they touch! In fact I was considering going on a rant about them in one of the generalized complaint threads. They're especially prevalent in any recipe or thing that's intermittent fasting/low carb/keto related or adjacent.
Also for what it's worth I don't care for coconut milk.

I loved all the coconuts I had in Thailand, but I found coconuts in both the Philippines and Hawaii to be really cloying and gross. Not particularly tasty. Haven't had any Caribbean coconuts yet. I was in the Dominican once for a wedding and on a beach day found a coconut that had fallen off a tree sitting on the grass on the property. I decided "hey, why not" and threw it against the concrete until it cracked open enough for me to rip the husk away and get to the inner part. It was delicious, as was the water inside of it. I have had a harder time finding good coconuts on the grocery store shelves here, like greater than 75% of the time I open them and they've gone moldy inside or smell/taste rancid. I got tired of bringing it back to get a replacement so just stopped buying them. Seems they don't ship well, or maybe people don't buy them enough and they just go bad sitting on the shelf.

I like all things coconut, cookies, ice cream, cream pie, butter, curries, dried flakes, soups. About the only thing I don't like are the little tiny sweetened shreds you get in the baking section. (though once they are in macaroon form I'm good with 'em. I didn't get a chance to vote, but I am definitely with the majority on this one.

Coconut milk is fine for cooking, fresh coconut from a beach vendor on vacation is fine once in a blue moon too.
Coconut flakes in or on candy/biscuits/cookies etc. is the worst though and needs to be outlawed.
(Edit: And the death penalty should be mandatory for whoever made that abomination in the pic above)

I am with Liz n Dick. Awful stuff, horrible smell, texture. It is a nasty surprise hiding inside otherwise tasty treats like cookies or chocolates. Eating a box of chocolates is like playing minesweeper, sometimes I have to take tiny exploratory bites. I still remember my first introduction to coconut, an Easter party where I was probably 4. There was a cake that looked like an Easter Bunny and the fur was these weird shavings. I did not know any better and took a big bite. Ugh, I can still taste it.

I always keep a can of coconut milk handy in case I feel like making a Thai curry. Also I like coconut cookies dipped in coffee. I find the flavours combine handily. Anyway I live in the middle of the continent so I don't trust coconuts from the grocery store, but I do also like fresh coconut meat.

I think coconut is like mint (two flavors that would be disgusting together) in that the real thing is delicious, but the synthetic flavoring/scent is beyond vile.
Coconut-scented products are gross, but I love a good macaroon.

I love everything coconut, have even moved onto pandanus for variety, but I can not stand packaged coconut water. It just doesn't taste edible, like yeah I can swallow it but it's like swallowing medicine and I don't feel satisfied at all.
