They're not dirty like potatoes.

No, but I rinse them afterwards to get rid of any lingering dirt/stray peelings/possible hand crud. And I don't always peel them: if they look bright and fresh I just give them a good wash, then chop.

Yes, because they are caked in dirt here.

The bulk carrots I buy at the big box grocery store I frequent don't appear especially dirty, but once you start peeling it's clear they were covered in a thin film of grime. It's the same amount of effort to rinse them before or after, but rinsing them before makes the whole experience more pleasant.

It depends on the carrot for me. Since I'll normally give them a little rinse after peeling to get the stuck bits off, I don't really like to have to wash them twice. I'm a busy person -- I haven't got time to be washing carrots all the time! If they're really gritty or actively dirty (my CSA carrots tend to be not very well washed if they're coming with fronds attached, but late-season ones without fronds tend to be cleaned better), then yes, they get a pre-wash too, because it's no fun to peel a carrot that's all muddy and sandy. But like songstarliner, if they're nice and fresh and look like they were picked a bit on the younger, tenderer side, I won't peel them at all. Spring carrots I'll just eat as-is.

Yeah, you gotta wash root vegetables. Its just a good idea. The ones were I am are on the dirty side. Not as bad as potatoes but I wouldn't eat an unwashed, raw carrot or daikon from the market.

Fresh carrots I don't peel. So those I will give a cursory rinse. Store-bought carrots that come in bags I do peel, so I find no need to wash them.
