I am testing a different cell phone service called Visible. Our current service is Verizon, we have two phones and a tablet on a grandfathered service plan (I needed a lot of tetherable data) which costs us about $200 per month. Visible uses Verizon's towers, and I no longer am tethering my laptop on service calls every day, so if this works well, we are planning to drop the tablet and keep the two phones for a cost of around $50- $80 per month total (less on their version of a friends and family plan). If it works well and we keep it, I will be able to give people a referral code to get them a discount on their first month if they sign up. I looked into all this, and although it sounds a little like a pyramid scam, it appears to be legit. I will keep you posted as to how all this is working out.

I put the kids on Mint Mobile, which sounds similar, although it uses T-mobiles towers instead of Verizons. If T-mobile had better coverage, I'd probably switch mine and Mrs. Rumak's, as well.

It's been over a month now, and so far, so good. I have noticed that sometimes data seems a bit slower on Visible than it was on Verizon, especially in more heavily populated areas, but the lesser cost more than makes up for it. Phone service seems fine. Mrs. Floyd is going to switch to it as soon as she picks out a new phone, and I'm going to port both numbers over and shut off Verizon. We are going to shut off the tablet we hardly ever use, since supposedly Visible has unlimited hotspot, and our bill will be more than cut in half. If anybody is interested, PM me and I can give you my code, which would get you your first month of Visible service for $5 (and would also get me a discount on that month's bill).

After two evenings spent on the phone, our numbers are ported over and our Verizon account is closed. After dropping the tablet from service and porting our phones over to Visible, and joining their "pay party" plan, our bill is supposed to drop from $200 a month to $50 a month.
If anybody is interested, dm me and I can tell you how to get your first month for $5.

We just switched from T-Mobile to Google Fi at about half the cost for a family of 4. The transition was fairly seamless, apparently you can just download a virtual SIM card now, no need to exchange the tiny piece of plastic I was always afraid of losing.
I did stop getting text messages from my bank for a while. This seems to be a common issue of some text servicers not recognizing google numbers as "real" even though they are the same numbers I have had for years with T-Mobile. The fix in my case was to find an old text message from my bank before I switched and to reply 'HELP.' This caused the bank system to reply with the menu options and to realize my number is still legit.
