As pre-attendance coursework for the leadership academy thing I'm going to next month, participants have to read, summarize and be prepared to discuss a 'leadership biography'. It doesn't have to be a military figure, so I'm looking for anyone interesting and offbeat. I've read a ton of comedian bios, although I don't know that you could call Steve Martin or Groucho Marx 'leaders'. I could go with the ole' flesh-raddler, Lawrence, but figure that for the military, he's a popular-ish choice. So, I throw it to you, the most erudite and well-read folks I can think of on short notice know - what are some good non-military, non-business leader bios?

I liked The Real Frank Zappa Book, Peter Occhiogrosso (1989) as an "iconoclast who gets things done" book.
So too did I enjoy, Highway to Hell: The Life and Death of AC/DC Legend Bon Scott, Clinton Walker (1994)
I also highly tout works by Nawal El Saadawi as books about people facing incredible adversity and seeing their way through to a victory because of their personal conviction in doing right and being morally good.

The Power Broker is an amazing biography of Ol' Bob Moses, who I guess was sort of a politician and absolutely a dick? It's also like 17000 pages long, because Robert Caro doesn't do anything by half.
