We have 'random thoughts' for almost all the other boards, but no random book chat. So now we do. I saw an add for some chunky-ass bookend designed to look like Bag End (although Walmart calls it a Dwarf Cave House), and other adds for big bookends like these And I thought, 'those are nice, but who has room for non-books on their bookshelves?' Mine are already stacked two-deep, with more slotted in on top of them, if they fit.

I don't have any room for bookends at all. I have some and they are still packed in boxes after I moved. I do have a couple of short bookshelves, and I do use the top of the shelf for books. I had previously used the bookends for those. But now I just stack books at the ends.

Yea, if anything I’m trying to work out what kind of additional bookshelf I could make work in my office to accommodate my overflow.

They've changed the matrix so that it was Fay Weldon who came up with "Go to Work on an Egg". Could've sworn it was Rushdie.

I took my daughter to the ballet last weekend - The Nutcracker, obviously - and I want to know who's responsible for my brain filling in the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy with the lyrics "Everyone's a Fruit & Nut-case". Way things are around here it was probably A.S. Byatt.

The greater the scientific advance, the more primitive the fear.

Iffy and I were discussing not necessarily favorite authors, but authors that make you feel heard, or make you feel like they must be a kindred spirit in some way.
He said Laini Taylor. I said Jo Walton, Terry Pratchett, and Seanan McGuire.

Emily St. John Mandel is coming to Des Moines as part of the library’s visiting author series this year and it’s when I already know I’ll be out of town for a conference ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
