The final economic report of the DBacks in 2023 was released this week. Their World Series run added approximately $100 million to the AZ economy.
In related news, their billionaire owner is trying to get the county to pay for stadium repairs.

Current Boston Red Sox were a new franchise in the upstart American League founded in 1901.

I read up on the Reds’ history on Wikipedia, and was a little confused as to how far back the current franchise considers their history to extend.

Maybe Ohtani can make it up by becoming the first player-manager since Rose in 1986? They should bring back player-managers. People are always talking about how it’s unusual that Ohtani is an elite pitcher and an elite hitter, but what would be really impressive is if he were to be an elite player-manager as well.

Woo! Good start to me being a Reds fan, as they defeat the Washington Nationals 8-2, largely due to an obscure 33 year old DH with less than a full season of MLB games under his belt hitting two home runs in his first ever opening day game. Also no runs given up by their starting pitcher in six innings pitched. And congratulations to Desert Dweller and her beloved Arizona Diamondbacks, who are on pace to score 2,592 runs this season.

Of course, MLB is responsible for this, scheduling the DBacks against the hapless Rockies. The Dbacks did upgrade their weak spots over the offseason. Of course, they play in a brutal division, so time will tell. If only they could play all their games vs the Rockies.

He won the AL Rookie of the Year in, I think, 1993. I also think he lives here and coaches a high school team? Maybe. I remember someone talking about this during the Fall League pre-COVID.

This is fun. As I said, thanks to MLB for scheduling the Dbacks opening weekend against the hapless Rockies. The team should hopefully win 3/4 of these. Winning 4 in a row against any team in MLB is hard, but that would be nice to see for the DBacks.
In related news, today the team did a press conference announcing the Jordan Montgomery signing. Scott Boras was there. Ooh, he did not look happy. He had such a miserable off season. You love to see it.
Apparently Montgomery had better offers from a couple other teams, but he considered them to be non-contending teams. He decided to take a short term deal from a team that was considered a contender. That's a lot of faith to put in an NL West team which isn't the Dodgers! Journalists also said he got offered a deal from the Yankees that was structured like the deal Ohtani took from the Dodgers, with money deferred until way into the future. But Montgomery can't afford that kind of deal, because he doesn't get the endorsement money that Ohtani has.
The DBacks President and Owner both spoke at this press conference. The owner said they were able to make this 1-year $25 million deal because of the extra money the DBacks got from their postseason run last year. He said the team was able to increase their payroll to $175 because of the extra money last year, and projections of increased ticket sales this year. The owner also mentioned that he'd be willing to spend even more at the trade deadline if the team were in contention. This is WILD STUFF to hear from the Dbacks owner, who is normally quite cheap.
The GM talked about how great it was to get all these moves made without having to tap into the farm system, and he indicated that the team would be willing to tap into that farm system at the trade deadline if needed.
Also, the Dbacks won their 2000th game as a franchise tonight. They are, after all, still one of the two youngest teams in baseball.
Finally, the team handed out NL Championship rings today. And tons of people on social media whined about getting a ring for 2nd place. Even though the NFL hands out rings for the AFC and NFC Champion teams and no one cares about that at all. Social media is weird.

Montgomery is a lefty starting pitcher. He pitched for the Texas Rangers last year, the team that won the World Series.
This year Boras represented 5 of the top 10 free agents on the market. People feared this would result in a spending spree that would widen the gulf between big market teams and everyone else. Instead the free agent market died. Boras couldn't get deals for his clients. And they all ended up taking worse deals - way worse -than he'd wanted.
If you google his name, you'll get quite a few results talking about Boras and the bust of the free agent market.

Alright, well, one series into the season, despite not having chosen one of the World Series favorites to root for this time, I’m feeling a lot more invested in supporting the Reds than I was with the Dodgers this time last season. In spite of a no-name 33 year old DH playing a surprisingly big role in the team’s scoring, the Reds seem to have a promising young offense and some suspect pitching, which made for a fun blowout win in the first game of the series, and two exciting back and forth games decided in the ninth inning in the second and third games, one involving a heartbreaking implosion from the Reds bullpen in the ninth, and the other involving the team coming from behind with back to back homers to win with two outs in the final inning. Baseball, it’s cool. Go Reds!

Reds center fielder (I think) Spencer Steer hits his first ever MLB grand slam in the top of the tenth to give Cincinnati their first extra innings win of the season. Realistically, I expect there to be disappointing stretches to this season, but this team is fun to watch and I’m glad they ended up being my choice of team to support.

Given that I'm having a harder time seeing the Mets even snagging one of the Wild Cards (being able to hit the side of a barn from even inside the barn would help), the D-Backs and potentially even the Reds might be the only non-repulsive NL teams to have a shot at a post-season run.

My Dad used to have this paperback of random silly Baseball lists. It's very late 70's/early 80's Dad humor. They'd have all kinds of all-star lists around name themes. If they still make it, I can imagine it including a Charlie Tuna All-Stars list that would definitely include Trout, Salmon and Catfish Hunter. It'd probably also include some lesser knowns strictly for pun value like Jim Walewander (who induced me and my Dad to find out about his favorite band The Dead Milkmen) or Jake Fishman (who played for the Marlins of course).

If the DBacks miss the playoffs this season by one game, it is 100% the fault of their manager Torey Lovullo for this dumpster fire game today. This was so ugly and messy that I am SHOCKED that the team only lost by one run. The following players get passing grades for this game: SP Merrill Kelly RP Ryan Thompson
Neutral grade: 2B/SS Ketel Marte
Everyone else, including Manager Torey Lovullo gets a Failing Grade.
Lovullo made two strange Pinch Hitting moves that seemed wrong *when he was making them* and turned out to be even worse than expected. Lovullo inexplicably let Ginkel pitch to Judge in extra innings. The Dbacks continue to make ridiculous baserunning errors, including Corbin Carroll committing a baseball sin by running into the 3rd out at 3rd base. There was no need to do that, Corbin!! And let's not forget RP McGough committing a BALK in extra innings to drive in a run! Oh, and the game going into extras caused the players to start pressing, and SS Perdomo tried to reach second base safely and injured his knee.
And the fun part was that when the DBacks had to remove Perdomo from the game, they had zero other hitters available, due to those aforementioned strange pinch hitting changes made by Torey earlier. So that, in the 11th inning, with the bases loaded, the Dbacks had no hitters available and had to have RP Scott McGough BATTING.
Dear Scott McGough, please know that I'm in no way giving you a failing grade for this game because you struck out to end the game. You are a pitcher. You should not have been hitting. That is TOREY LOVULLO'S fault. You are getting the failing grade because you balked in a run in extra innings.
My God, what a mess.
And now the Dbacks are off to Atlanta where they will likely get blown out in at least 2 out of those 3 games, because the two starting pitchers they acquired in the off-season are still not available, so they have to use guys who are really not MLB-ready yet. Sigh. This is going to be a rough week.

As a follow up, the media did their job here and asked Torey about this ugly, ugly game. Torey: "I felt like we beat ourselves today and that’s unacceptable.” No kidding! Good for Torey, who took responsibility for almost all the errors. He said pitching to Judge in extra innings was his mistake. He told the RP to pitch around Judge, but the RP doesn't have good enough command, and left one high over the plate. Now Torey is upset at himself that he didn't just issue the IBB. Yes, Torey, this situation is literally what the IBB is for! Torey's VERY mad about the two idiotic baserunning errors. Re: Corbin Carroll's dumb move: “I went into blackout stage when that happened, so I am still coming out of that. I was so mad,” Lovullo said. “I don’t know what happened. I’m gonna find out those answers. I’m not happy.” GOOD, Torey!! Torey says the baserunning errors are the fault of the coaches. The coaches need to do more training on this. Yes, obviously! The entire first week's worth of games have been filled with baserunning errors. He is still defending the dumbass PH moves. When asked why he took out the hottest hitter on the team and PH the worst hitter on the team, Torey said he "preferred a Right/Left matchup, because the numbers on Right/Right look bad". That's not how that statistic works, Torey. If your *specific* lefty hits worse against RHP than your *specific* righty does, then don't make this move. I mean, it should be obvious, right? Don't replace your hot hitter with a guy who should not be on the team and has loads of data telling us he isn't a good hitter. And on top of all that mess, today came this: Good grief. ALL of that mess, with the DBacks doing everything possible to beat themselves and the Ump favoring the other team by 1.28 runs, and the DBacks still only lost by 1 run. Amazing. BOTH teams should feel bad about themselves for that. Also, if you are umpire in a 1-run, Extra Innings game, the data shows you favored the winning team by MORE THAN one run, and your biggest blown call was the pitch that ended the game, I propose that this should result in an immediate 5 game suspension. Also, MLB, please change the rule that says the DH position needs to be locked in a position in the batting order. The DH is there to prevent pitchers from batting. This dumb rule results in a pitcher having to bat. Edited to add: Scott McGough was also asked about the balk in Extra Innings. He said he felt rushed by the pitch clock and though he was set. Apparently the Ump disagreed. I haven't seen this, so I don't know how close it was. (The game was on while I was at work.) Regardless, this is also on the coaches. Guys, isn't this what Spring Training is for? Were some of the pitchers not getting enough reps with the Pitch Clock running? Ugh, hope this game doesn't come back to bite them at the end of the year.

Because of the Balanced Schedule in place now, you will see interleague matchups all season. It is the only way to run the schedule if every team needs to play every other team at least once. For instance, Opening Weekend had the Cubs playing Texas.

Reds are 5-3, with Spencer Steer off to an incredible start, hitting .448. Perhaps more intriguing though, is their promising young shortstop Elly de la Cruz, who has been good offensively, and has a 13-game hit streak, which is good, but also has four errors in eight games, which is apparently bad (I was kind of surprised that a pickoff attempt where he dropped the ball in today’s game led to an error being given to the Reds’ pitcher, as it honestly seemed more like de la Cruz’ fault to me even if the throw wasn’t perfectly placed.
Anyway, what I’m asking is, what would y’all’s reaction be if Elly de la Cruz managed to record at least one hit in each of his next 47 games, breaking Joe DiMaggio’s hit streak record, and also recorded at least 119 more errors this season, thus breaking Herman Long’s record for most errors in a season the very same year that he broke the hitting record? I understand that de la Cruz is very unlikely to break either of these records, but if he broke both in the same season, wouldn’t that be weird?
