In July in the US, we celebrate our declaring our independence from England. Some 180-200 years later, England took revenge by ripping off music created in America by black people and blowing up the charts!
This month, nominate up to two albums created in England.

I don’t think there’s been a UK band as good as The Clash since The Clash, so -
The Clash - London Calling
The one UK band that has come close to being as good as The Clash is Spiritualized, so -
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space

999 - 999 (1978)
Hidden influence to Orange County/LA hardcore punk.
The Stupids - Peruvian Vacation (1985)
Kids in Ipswich cut a funny crossover hardcore record. Funnier than Lawnmower Deth or Fudge Tunnel.
Honourable mentions not put up for nomination:
Dethscalator - Racial Golf Course, No Bitches (2013)
Gazelle Twin and NYX - Deep England (2021)
Arty electronic musician reworks their preceding record into a choral meditation on what it means to be English. Bonus inclusion of a cover chant from The Wicker Man (1973).
Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations (1980)

Ok, here's two little known albums that shouldn't win but I love and want to draw attention to anyway:
Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Hurrah! Another Year, Surely This One Will Be Better Than The Last, The Inexorable March Of Progress Will Lead Us All to Happiness. (2005)
Apparently English wrestling sensation Zack Sabre Jr who plies his trade in the big leagues of Japan these days named a submission hold after this album, which is nice
Oceansize - Frames (2007)

PJ Harvey - White Chalk (2007) Her most underrated, for my money.
The Slits - Cut (1979) I don't think I've ever heard it despite owning the sophomore album and the Peel Sessions record.

I'll leave it to ganews to determine eligibility. If it makes you feel better, Dellarigg, I'll be voting for the Spiritualized record. So good.

I'm only nominating one thing because there's only one good English band and I don't want to split the vote by nominating multiple albums from their discography. Everyone knows that all the best UK bands come from Scotland.
Ned's Atomic Dustbin - God Fodder (1991)

If London Calling is deemed ineligible, I do, of course, have a back up, so -
Big Country - The Crossing

I also thought we’d done Entertainment and Cut but it turns out they were both close runner-ups. I’ll give a proper nomination for Gazelle Twin & NYX’s Deep England. Are compilations allowed? If so I’ll nominate New Order’s 2005 compilation Singles, which collects their singles from 1981-2005 and is pretty coherent as far as a compilation goes. It comes to mind as, despite being a lot of great music, it also passes through some fairly dark places of the national character, thinking in particular of “World in motion.”
