Hi all, I am nowimnothing, long time avclub lurker. I have been working my way through several series ever since I got a treadmill last Spring. So far I blew through seasons 1-7 of Dexter, season 1 of Boardwalk Empire and Season 3 of Game of Thrones. I was waiting on the last season of Dexter just before Christmas when I decided to finally take the plunge on The Wire. Of course I had heard you all talk about it incessantly so it has been on my list for a while. After I watched the first couple of episodes I was disappointed to see that the AVClub reviews did not pick up until the last season.
I do not think I will be posting lengthy reviews. I am more interested in all your comments, either from veterans of the show or new watchers like me. I will probably just post a short summary and a few thoughts on each episode and see where the conversation goes from there. I am not sure what we will do when we get to the last season, we can cross that bridge when we get to it. I should be posting fairly regularly. I tend to watch 2-3 episodes a week on my treadmill.
I know it is now an old show but let's try to avoid major spoilers. I have been spoiled a bit already and I will try to keep those out of my reviews. That being said I am not one of those who screams and sticks their head in that sand at the slightest hint of a spoiler, let's just keep it reasonable for newbies.

Whoa, nice, I didn't realize these were starting. I'll be watching along and participating for sure; I'm a newbie, like you. I'll try to keep up, but ahh, already three episodes in. Slow down! (Just kidding, you can go at whatever pace you'd like).

Whoa, nice, I didn't realize these were starting. Although, as you may find out, it may be hard to actually give a vets perspective on the show without giving away stuff (it's that kind of show SPOILER).

It would be hard to comment without giving away spoilers. This is a show that really needs to be watched, at least, a second time to appreciate just how much is going on. One thing that I will recommend is that you find the HBO character maps and learn who everyone is as early as possible to try to eliminate confusion. The Wire is very different in the way it introduces you to characters without the exposition that occurs in 99% of TV and it can be very difficult to pick up the names of characters or exactly who they are since it might be mentioned only in passing. I found this most noticeable in S1, as the show is sort of teaching you how to watch it, and later seasons were not quite as bad since you had learned to pay more attention. The show will also introduce a character without letting you know who they are for awhile, simulating you being dropped into a situation and having to figure out for yourself who people are. I couldn't find the S1 HBO map (and I would recommend if you do find them, you stick to the season you are currently watching) but here is The Wire S1 Character wiki page which seems non-spoilerish. I have found Alan Sepinwall's newbie reviews at What's Alan Watching (The Wire S1/EP1) to be very helpful along with the Guardian's veteran reviews and discussion ( Guardian S1/EP1).
