Summary:
Daniels is between a rock and a hard place as the connected father-in-law of Prez comes into the picture. His supervisor advises him to get some quick busts and close the case. McNulty tries to get the older officers to get a picture of Avon Barksdale but they are incompetent. Another officer perks up at the mention of Golden Gloves and comes through with a poster and an air of mystery.
McNulty, Greggs and Bubbles have a funny conversation about their personal lives. McNulty calls Bubbles out for having so much seeming wisdom but having an even more fucked up life. Bubbles helps the undercover cop perfect his look and then takes him to make some buys.
McNulty has a romantic encounter with Judge Pearlman after asking about cloning a pager.
D'Angelo is doing good at the low rises, creating a better organization and bringing in more money. He talks about how the cops are more interested in the violence than the drugs and if they can cut the violence out the cops would not be so interested. He explains chess to a couple of others using the gang as metaphors. The pawns die quickly but if they can hold on they can eventually become queen. It all crashes down for D'Angelo when a rival gang infiltrates the stash apartment, shooting one kid in the leg while D'Angelo is out for food.
Daniels insists on a raid but McNulty refuses explaining how they move the stash apartment around and how organized they are. The raid goes as poorly as can be expected with one old cop getting cold cocked by a kid.
McNulty's FBI friend tells him that Daniels has been under investigation and has a lot of unaccounted money but that the local cops dropped the inquiry.
Random Thoughts:
I like how each of the characters are unique and have unique motivations. There are a few pairs like the non-Prez lunkheads or the retirement cops that have done little to distinguish themselves but most seem to have real if mysterious motivations.
I was surprised by the Pearlman/McNulty encounter. I had not recognized any sexual chemistry between them before. Normally in a TV show the guy is usually with a woman significantly younger and better looking than he is. They seemed more the same age and while she is not unattractive, she is pretty average for TV. Even more surprising that she was the mistress while he was married.
I did not connect the guys in the van with another gang until they went into the stash apartment. I had thought they were working for Avon either keeping tabs on his nephew and dealers and/or the cops.
I was really surprised when Greggs jumped into the beating at the raid. I was sure she would try to stop it, instead she was yelling for them to hold his arms.
Only 3 episodes in and there are a lot of threads going on, this may be a difficult series to succinctly summarize.
